Birding the cape and elsewhere. Cape Sable Island map. Clam Point CSI, Yard wildlife. CSI – Big Year. My first attempt at a birding book was ‘Going for Broke’. In 1984 and well before the birding communications revolution I did a big year in the UK. It wasn’t all birding, there are lots of diversions in there. At $2.99CAD it’s a snip and all lavishly illustrated by Sandra Dennis. Here are links to other sites carrying the books – the name is in the link title:. This is the next eBook I’ll publish, ...

Birding the cape and elsewhere. Cape Sable Island map. Clam Point CSI, Yard wildlife. CSI – Big Year. Clam Point CSI, Yard wildlife. We moved into our Clam Point home on 28. May 2015. The yard list started as soon as the engine stopped, despite allegedly more pressing matters! If we get any rarities then you are welcome to come along and view them, just leave room for us to exit the drive. See eBird for details of our exact location, if you don’t use eBird, now is the time to learn. Brant – 2-Feb-16.

Birding the cape and elsewhere. Cape Sable Island map. Clam Point CSI, Yard wildlife. CSI – Big Year. CSI – Big Year. As the dregs of December 2015 slip away, a young or old man’s fancy turns to year lists, it has been a good year, next year will be better. Dawn January 1. For those who want to join me in this epic quest there are a few rules that I will be applying. 1, All birds must be seen no ‘heard only’, that is just how it is. 4, Anyone can join the fun or leave the race at any time, your choice.

Birding in...: BP/Seal rarities!
http://ssmbirding.blogspot.com/2014/11/bpseal-rarities.html
Adventures of a Sault Ste. Marie birder. Wednesday, November 19, 2014. I can't even imagine what would be found there if it had regular coverage - as it stands it is usually only birded for a week or two every fall! As with last year, the list below covers all species seen (by us) on the islands which are noted on the NSRBA as 'reportable' species. Again, bold. Indicates a 'good' rarity, CAPS. Apologies for some of the photos' quality, many of these were taken with my cell phone! Eurasian Wigeon - 1 -.
Birding in...: December 2013
http://ssmbirding.blogspot.com/2013_12_01_archive.html
Adventures of a Sault Ste. Marie birder. Tuesday, December 31, 2013. More posts to come on BP when I get around to it, but for now here's a look back at 2013! The year started off pretty typically, back home seeing a few new birds for the year before heading back to Guelph for my last semester! This got me up to 113 species for the year, not a bad start for not leaving Ontario! More school work (a lot! 126 species for the year. The start of spring and the end of school were welcome reliefs for me! I fini...

Adventures of a Sault Ste. Marie birder. Thursday, June 13, 2013. Pelee photos pt. 13. AKA more horribly cropped photos of rarities.just a few more and then it's on to good shots of common birds! Brandon and I were bored out of our minds one afternoon - spent it at the Tip photographing swallows and kingbirds sitting on the sand, then when we got tired of that I started digging holes - at which point we joked about how digging holes and skipping rocks seem to turn up rarities while at a waterbird count.

Sunday, April 12, 2015. Two Ross's Geese in Nova Scotia. Ross's Geese ( Chen rossii. Breed in northern Canada and winter in a fragmented range from the Atlantic to the Pacific coast of the US. It typically migrates through central North America. Since the 1950s, this small white goose's breeding and wintering grounds have been expanding eastward. This expansion is thought to have resulted in more contact with Snow Geese and thus more hybridization. (All About Birds, n.d.). 5 April, 2015. 3 April, 2015...

Friday, August 24, 2012. The mosaic darners, genus Aeshna. Are of course the large, conspicuous dragonflies that fly, sometimes in impressive swarms, throughout the Ontario summer. Of the one dozen species. Found in Ontario, eight. Are known from the Thunder Bay District. Of these, three - the Sedge. Have distinctly northern affinities and are among the less commonly seen species in our region. At sites where I'd found them previously. The Subarctic Darner,. July 15, 2012. Male Sedge Darner, July 15, 2012.

Thursday, November 14, 2013. The latest Western Kingbird. The intrepid Alan Wormington, who has an uncanny knack for turning up interesting birds during his annual forays across the north shore, found this Western Kingbird. A casual visitor to the district, on October 18, 2013 at the Schreiber-Terrace Bay landfill, a stone's throw from the Trans-Canada Highway. Thanks for sharing your photos Alan. October 18, 2013. Wednesday, July 11, 2012. A few sights from Hurkett Cove. En route to Thunder Bay this morning, I stopped in at Hurkett Cove Conservation Area. Hoping to see some early southbound shorebirds. Friday, June 29, 2012. New to the Thunder Bay District.the Red Saddlebags. Just a quick note as we pack up for a weekend excursion. A few days ago I caught a glimpse of a fast-flying mostly-red Tramea. Along the Pic River, just east of Marathon. I was intrigued as this southern genus is scarcely known from northern Ontario. In the Thunder Bay District we have but two records. Of a single species, the Black Saddlebags ( Tramea lacerata. I again encountered mostly-red saddlebags on the wing.awesome! Regard...

Cape Sable Birding | Birding the cape and elsewhere
Birding the cape and elsewhere. Clam Point Yard list. CSI – Big Year. August 16, 2015. Quite why an adult male Rufous Hummingbird would head due east on migration instead of south is not fully understood. Certainly the bird’s internal compass is skewed, or perhaps it just heard what a delightful place Nova Scotia is and decided to visit, we will never know. Either way, the bird below near Kemptville is certainly pleasing a lot of birders in southern Nova Scotia, Sandra and myself amongst them. After our ...
