Preserve your family stories and pass them on. I have returned home from the trip to Ottawa, happy with all the new things that I discovered. I learned a lot about Harry and his brother Charles, as well as what it takes to do research in primary documents. It’s really cool that a lot of old info gets saved, and that it’s accessible to anybody who wants to go look at it. Canadian War Museum, Ottawa. Some of the records I requested were generically about the 5. Canadian Mounted Rifles, and others turned ou...

Preserve your family stories and pass them on. A woman’s perspective on war Testament of Youth. Last weekend I took a quick trip up to Kingston, Ontario to see the wonderful World War I movie called Testament of Youth. Always nice to see a movie at the independent movie theater up there, The Screening Room. Vera’s memoir documents how one by one, the young men in her life that she loved disappeared into the war. Her brother desperately wanted to go to the front; like almost everyone, he thought that ...

Preserve your family stories and pass them on. Monthly Archives: February 2015. Another Harry in World War I. The blog was created by another grandchild who documented their grandfather Harry’s experiences in World War I! This approach taps into two of the factors named as very important in one of the books we’re reading for our Digital Storytelling class it is sequential (Alexander 13) and it presents a mystery and pulls readers into wanting to know more (Alexander 9). February 28, 2015. Have you ever m...

Preserve your family stories and pass them on. Monthly Archives: May 2015. In keeping with the original purpose of Memorial Day, I wanted to post a nice story that NBC Nightly news did last night (May 24, 2015). They interviewed people who are doing a 2,000 mile walk with a group called, Carry the Load. Each person walking talked about one or more people that they are carrying on the trip – veterans who have died. Here’s the NBC story:. And here’s the link to the Carry the Load website:. Preserve your family stories and pass them on. YMCA and Non-Combat Service in WWI. I’m continuing to go through my grandather’s WWI scrapbook, and one of the recent pages included a pamphlet from the YMCA for returning soldiers which outlined resources to help with the soldiers’ transition back to civilian life, including places to sleep, job listings, and assistance with pay and benefits from the Canadian military. This entry was posted in Grandfather's history. May 13, 2015. By Mindy Bowen Boenning.

Capturing History | Preserve your family stories and pass them on
Preserve your family stories and pass them on. A visit to the cemetery. Harry Bowen’s grave in Indiana, PA. Harry’s and Jean’s graves, with butterfly bush. Only after we left did I realize that we probably could have gotten vases from the cemetery office they were all identical on the other graves, which would be too coincidental if every family had to bring their own vase. But I ended up being happy that we had focused on a live plant after my mom sent me this great poem about plastic flowers. Testament...
