Capt. Wilson's Overlander

Tuesday, October 22, 2013. This year was another great season of camping and enjoying our State Park system. We kicked off with a return trip to Lincoln Rock State Park in Eastern Washington. This was my first chance to show off the vintage license plate we added during the off-season. We camped in the same site we had last year and plan to go back again next year. Eastern Washington is a perfect first trip of the season. Who loaned me his Cyclo. The observatory has a junior ranger program and excellent ...

Capt. Wilson's Overlander: December 2010

http://captwilsonsoverlander.blogspot.com/2010_12_01_archive.html

Friday, December 31, 2010. We decided to go ahead and install a new furnace as part of this restoration since we hope to extend our camping season a bit into the colder weather months in the Northwest. Unfortunatley, up here, that can easily include June and September. So, without heat, the camping season could be much too short (I have to admit we are kinda weather whimps). So, I need to install yet another patch to cover the old vent location. Saturday, December 18, 2010. Another evening, I managed to ...

Capt. Wilson's Overlander: February 2011

http://captwilsonsoverlander.blogspot.com/2011_02_01_archive.html

Sunday, February 6, 2011. Lots of little things. I've been on a pretty good roll this last month. After finishing up the plumbing under the streetside bed, it was time to finish installing the remaining cabinets. I started with the curbside bed (the one on the left). It was nice to get this back in as it gave me a place to keep my tools and supplies organized. Once the cabinets and bunks were in, I moved back to finishing the furnace installation and running the duct lines. First order of business wa...

Tuesday, June 7, 2011. Finishing Up and Going Camping. I've been busy on the trailer the last couple months leading up to our first trip of the season last weekend. We took the trailer out to Fort Stevens State Park outside of Astoria, Oregon with the Webers. The weather was amazing - especially for the Oregon coast in early June. It was about 75 degrees and sunny on Saturday and we spent much of our time with the girls on the beach. And contined with the installation of all the gas lines. The gas li...

Capt. Wilson's Overlander: June 2012

http://captwilsonsoverlander.blogspot.com/2012_06_01_archive.html

Friday, June 22, 2012. Wanapum is a classic high-desert river campground that reminds me of many a childhood camping trip. It's on the Columbia river in Eastern Washington off of I90 in the middle of nowhere. For miles in either direction, all you can find is desolate scrub brush hills filled with rattlesnakes. But the irrigation waters of the Columbia here create a nice little oasis in the middle of this desert. Over the winter, the Captain was locked down next door and got a good coat of ice and snow.

Our '59 Flying Cloud. Tuesday, August 18, 2009. Oh, boy. Do I have a lot to tell you about. And next, one picture from the maiden trip to the beautiful Washington coast:. A few weeks before the 18 footer was stolen from our home, we had booked the first trip of the season. A late July trip to Grayland Beach State Park. When the 18 footer was stolen, we vowed to get another Airstream ready to camp by that trip. Since then, we've pushed hard to make that happen. Stainless steel screws to attach the vents.

Our '59 Flying Cloud. Tuesday, May 26, 2009. Let the polishing begin! Hi, could you pass a chocolate donut and juice box, please? I must be crazy to start a polishing project now! Polishing a trailer takes many many dozens of hours. At a time in the project when we need to see some rapid action, I choose to polish. What am I thinking? I justify my decision to polish by looking at the two tone colors from our panel replacement. Emmett came down to help. He loves his 'Bapa' and can't be more than a few...

Our '59 Flying Cloud. Monday, June 22, 2009. From here on out, it's all gravy. For the last six weeks, we've been polishing. It's satisfying looking at the finished product while thinking back at all those hours, but I am SO GLAD to be doing something else. It just so happens that the project I'm working on now is one that I love: putting stuff back on. Begin with the marker light base. These are aluminum so I can polish them someday. Lucky me! Step 6: Attach the cover plate and admire. After that was th...

Our '59 Flying Cloud. Thursday, February 26, 2009. Get your weld on. This weekend was dedicated to the frame. Looking at the before and after of two and a half long days, doesn't look that impressive. We did a on of work, but it doesn't look much different than when we started. Ted, my father-in-law came to help. HUGE HELP! He cuts, grinds, marks, helps set up, tickles the grandkids, drinks coffee and has a big smile the whole time! Neat sparks. Emmett never gets tired of watching them. The weekend of Fe...

1959 Airstream Overlander, "Someday": April 2012

http://someday1959.blogspot.com/2012_04_01_archive.html

1959 Airstream Overlander, "Someday". We're restoring a 1959 Airstream Overlander travel trailer, down to the bones and back up again. We've christened this trailer "Someday," based on one of our favorite quotes:. Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday. There is no someday. Saturday, April 21, 2012. This is our "left list". this stuff is what's left on the list:. Clean seams, polish, reseal seams. We need to find a threshold. Also, rebuild and install the step. Then, install a new seal.

Our '59 Flying Cloud: March 2009

http://59flyingcloud.blogspot.com/2009_03_01_archive.html

Our '59 Flying Cloud. Monday, March 30, 2009. Continuing on with the sub floor. Three sheets of ply last weekend and two to go. Tough part is, these last two sheets can't go down unil the holding tanks are all plumbed and ready to cover. My mom came up to help again by watching our two rug rats. Well, one rug rat and one in training. We also used hose to plumb the shower drain. That is the second hose in this next photo. An included hose will lead over to the valve area for leisurely cleaning. Saturday s...

Our '59 Flying Cloud. Tuesday, April 28, 2009. Insulation and skinning the belly. I wish I could rock a pair of star sunglasses like my little baby does! You can call him Leon, but we call him Mr. Goo. Took a 30 second (max) walk, rain drops as big as gumballs. Back to trailer work on the weekend. The time has come to finish all the projects on the underside of the trailer and get ready to insulate and cover. Brake line all prepped and ready to hook up. C channel was bolted in place. Part of the fun with...

CapTwist

Save your fingers: open bottles with CapTwist! There are two sides to the CapTwist to ensure a snug fit when opening a bottle. We effectively used it on water. And even some nail polish bottles. Take it with you. Keep CapTwist in a junk drawer at home, or use the key chain hole to take it with you or to attach it to your cooler. It is small enough to fit in a purse or a backpack; yet it fits just right in your hand. Don't you just hate wrestling with bottle caps? That you have arthritis.
