From my previous manufacturing experience, I know about 20% of the product cost usually goes to materials while 80% goes to other cost factors such as Manufacturing, R&D, A&P, Administrations, etc. I can’t estimate a particular unit cost unless I do an exercise taking it apart and getting quotes on those various parts. But I won’t go down that avenue. And how reliable are they?

Once you’ve finally assembled the watch winder unit, you’ll truly be excited flicking the power switch for the first time. Well, I was! This unit has 4 modes of operation: -. At Rest, the circuit draws only about 2mA and depending on the weight of the load, when Rotating it draws as high as 60mA. This is how it looked like fully. Assembled from the front. Every where I look, there are many people asking, sourcing, sharing, discussing, swearing, advertising, debating, commenting and lamenting about cheap watch winders in the web. How exactly is cheap? To make my point, let’s begin to make a real simple cheapo watch winder! Basically, a watch winder consist of the following: -. Lots of imagination, patience and luck. Once I’...

To achieve perfect aim, just shoot then call anything you hit as target. Monday, September 28, 2009. Automatic watches have mainsprings that wind in a clockwise, anti-clockwise or either way. There are also a minimum number of turns that would maintain the torque of the mainspring, thus keeping them wound. A manufacturer of an automatic timepiece would specify the minimum TPD for that particular watch model (caliber) and its best to set the winder to meet this requirement. We are truly blessed to hav...

The circuit itself has very few components, and in the picture you’ll see more jumper wires than actual parts going into the circuit. I’ll solder the circuit to a veroboard once I’ve confirmed the circuit, and in that way, you’ll get to see how the whole circuit looks like. Timings were recorded using the lap-time function on my cell phone. The motor seems to tur...

To achieve perfect aim, just shoot then call anything you hit as target. Sunday, October 18, 2009. I Found a Spinner URGHHHH! That was the question I asked myself when reading off some websites. I always thought that it’s impossible for a manufacturer to make a spinner and market it as a Professional Watch Winder. I was proven wrong when someone brought this unit to me for repair. PVC scrapings were seen at the base because of the poor construction. The winding cup, with the weight of the watches, wa...

To achieve perfect aim, just shoot then call anything you hit as target. Wednesday, October 14, 2009. The heart of a watch winder is the motor. The circuit board is the brains and the rotating table(s) is/are the arms. To see warranties stretching 12 months would be a great comfort if I were ever to purchase such product. This would mean that the manufacturer is confident its product would last for more that 12 months at least. There is something about MTBF (Mean-Time-Before-Failure) calculations...Watch...

Available for individual watches are much preferred. 1200tpd being the highest preferred. At least a Low-High selection. 2) Selectable Winding Direction. Alternating only would be fine; but all 3 directions is the best. If the unit has a CW and CCW only selection, ensure you reverse the direction of wind daily to evenly exercise your timepiece. 3) Wide Watch Slots.
