Last things | Caring for Dad
https://caringfordadblog.wordpress.com/2016/01/30/last-things
Afternoons with an elder. The day has come when I have to tell you that Dad has died. He passed away just after midday on Thursday January 28th. He had bronchial pneumonia. Late afternoon on Monday when he started to be unwell, he looked at me and asked: Where are the children? Probably thinking I was my mother, he meant his. I said. He insisted – and was fetched a big bowl of ice cream which he ate with some gusto. He loved ice cream, unfailingly – we always thought this was because ...On Thursday mid-m...

Ethical Issues | Caring for Dad
https://caringfordadblog.wordpress.com/ethical-issues
Afternoons with an elder. I have been slow to write this page – which is poor practice on my part. When I started to think about writing a blog about my time spent with Dad, I also started to realise that there would be ethical issues to consider as part of the transparency that comes with blogging and it has needed starting to write the blog to think these issues through. People, and especially not at Dad. The trick is, of course, to laugh. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here. You are co...

Afternoons with an elder. Newer posts →. Posted in Social policy. This afternoon, I visited Dad with some trepidation. Yesterday evening, he rang me several times to ask the time and:. What should I be doing? Alarmed by the third phone call, I alerted the night staff at the care home and they promised to keep an extra eye on him. You should think twice before you send your son to a boarding school. Dad’s words recently – and I never did or would have done so. I mentioned in a previous post.

Ethical Issues | Living with Autism
https://dylanandliz.wordpress.com/ethical-issues
A Ethical Issues for Me. Keeping a blog about the life of a disabled person who cannot give ‘informed consent’ clearly raises ethical issues. Carers of people with limited communication (as is the situation with Dylan) negotiate ethical issues on a daily basis, a process of decision-making and review which means ethical practice is dynamic and continually evolving. Reflects these considerations and my attempt to respond ethically to them. I will benefit from this process of review, which encourages me to...
The Humber Bridge | Living with Autism
https://dylanandliz.wordpress.com/2015/07/30/the-humber-bridge
Posted in Policy and Provision. Before I had my own family I used to say that for every child I gave birth to I would adopt another. This seemed a small but realistic way of balancing the desire to have a biological child with the desperate need of already-born children for a family. S; Dylan needed me and it wasn’t possible to undertake such commitments with him in tow. So I made donations to charity instead; I might not be able to give my time but I could at least do this. Some years ago Dylan and I we...

Ears Are Really Useful Things | Living with Autism

Ears Are Really Useful Things. Posted in Language and Communication. This is not the post I had intended to make this week but, as is often the case, something happened. Ears: I’ve mentioned these before as Dylan has a habit of trying to remove them (other people’s not his own) when he is anxious. I hadn’t realised until this week, however, how useful ears can be. This week’s incident happened at 9pm on Friday night. Dylan was in his room watching. Thomas the Tank Engine. I thought to myself,. July 26, 2...

Posted in A Parent's World. This week is the start of the academic year in England; pretty soon I will be deep in teaching. Although September no longer marks a transition point for Dylan I don’t think I will ever lose the anxiety that the end of summer brings for parents of children with disabilities. Each year I would live on my nerves through the first weeks of term, hoping desperately that all would be well. I’m really glad that I took that ‘ next step. Is there a science to it? As well as the checkl...

Caring for Dad | afternoons with an elder
Afternoons with an elder. Hello to all readers. This blog records the time I am spending with my elderly Dad. This means writing about incidents like a phone call at 4am in the morning asking me to tell him how to phone me – yes, it taxes the brain. It also includes philosophical questions directed at the wearing of clothes – WHY? Why, indeed. There’s lots of swearing at technological devices. Welcome to this world. Probably thinking I was my mother, he meant his. Children not mine. He was puzzling o...
