Plastic Sax: Concert Review: Trio M at Take Five Coffee + Bar
http://plasticsax.blogspot.com/2015/04/concert-review-trio-m-at-take-five.html
An irreverent and opinionated guide to jazz in Kansas City. Monday, April 13, 2015. Concert Review: Trio M at Take Five Coffee Bar. If the musicians in attendance at Take Five Coffee Bar on Sunday felt the same way I did, the Kansas City jazz scene may never be the same. Kansas City’s elite masters of improvised music represented about a third of the audience of about 50 that witnessed an ingenious performance by Trio M. Original image by Plastic Sax.). Plastic Sax: Doug and Lori Chandler: The Plastic Sax People of the Year

An irreverent and opinionated guide to jazz in Kansas City. Monday, December 31, 2012. Doug and Lori Chandler: The Plastic Sax People of the Year. Two of the most valuable people on Kansas City's jazz scene are amateur musicians. Doug Chandler plays drums. Lori Chandler is a bass guitar student. Yet the couple's musical talents have nothing to do with the crucial contribution they've made to the area's live music landscape. The co-owners of Take Five Coffee Bar. Are Plastic Sax's 2012 people of the year.

Plastic Sax: Album Review: Dojo- Road Trip
http://plasticsax.blogspot.com/2014/01/album-review-dojo-road-trip.html
An irreverent and opinionated guide to jazz in Kansas City. Monday, January 13, 2014. Album Review: Dojo- Road Trip. I don't subscribe to the notion of guilty pleasures. I freely admit my affection for scads of unfashionable music, ranging from the lewd hip-hop of Tech N9ne to the prog-rock of 1970s-era Genesis. Perhaps no style of music is more out of favor than jazz fusion. Jazz purists detest it while most of the rock audience pretends the form doesn't exist. Road Trip. The new album by Dojo. Baggett'...

Plastic Sax: Concert Review: Shades of Jade at Coda
http://plasticsax.blogspot.com/2015/08/concert-review-shades-of-jade-at-coda.html
An irreverent and opinionated guide to jazz in Kansas City. Sunday, August 2, 2015. Concert Review: Shades of Jade at Coda. Many respectable members of Kansas City’s jazz community would insist that the music I heard at Coda on Saturday wasn’t jazz. Maybe they’re right. Yet I’d rather hear Shades of Jade. 8217;s version of soul than a musty recreation of the music of yesteryear. The two vocalists seemed to have Lauryn Hill in mind as they sang while Williams and Mason may have been going for the sound of...

Plastic Sax: Kidz Bop
http://plasticsax.blogspot.com/2015/07/kidz-bop.html
An irreverent and opinionated guide to jazz in Kansas City. Sunday, July 26, 2015. I saw a young couple get carded at the Piano Room. Last Monday. That’s a rare sight at venues featuring live jazz (with the exception of the late-night party venue the Mutual Musicians Foundation). The kids were listening to their peers in the Waldo Jazz Collective. A set list that included compositions by Duke Ellington and James Brown reflects the band’s eclectic sensibility and the relaxed setting. 5 Star Jazz Band.

An irreverent and opinionated guide to jazz in Kansas City. Monday, May 18, 2015. Concert Review: Avishai Cohen's Triveni at Take Five Coffee Bar. Among the more than 100 people who purchased $20 advance tickets or paid $25 at the door to hear a performance by Avishai Cohen. 8217;s Triveni at Take Five Coffee Bar last Thursday were a couple dozen faces I’d never seen. Cohen, bassist Tal Mashiach and drummer Nasheet Waits seduced them with the boiling frog technique. Original image by Plastic Sax.). Dino ...

An irreverent and opinionated guide to jazz in Kansas City. Sunday, August 9, 2015. Taking Stock at Take Five Coffee Bar. 8220;Coffee is coffee and food is food but this is something different,” Lori Chandler said Friday at Take Five Coffee Bar. “It's the community that makes all of this worth it.”. Take Five will close after a performance on August 15. 8220;My plea to you guys is to find out where they're playing and go listen,” Chandler said.
