Carlisle Postcards: Stanwix Bank Cottages & The Creighton Memorial

http://carlislepostcards.blogspot.com/2008/02/stanwix-bank-cottages-creighton.html

Thursday, February 14, 2008. Stanwix Bank Cottages and The Creighton Memorial. CLICK ON IMAGES TO ENLARGE. These are the old cottages that stood at the junction of Stanwix Bank and Brampton Road. They were demolished in 1904. Note the water pump and mileage board. The Creighton Memorial stood close to where The Civic Centre is now. It was erected in 1898 in honour of J.R. Creighton and was moved in 1970 for the building of the new roundabout and dual carriageway. Posted by David at 1:02 AM. Hi David....

Friday, November 17, 2006. Town Hall, some snow and a tram. CLICK ON IMAGE TO ENLARGE. An artcard featuring Carlisle Station circa 1906. An Act was passed for the building of the station in 1846 and the first trains steamed in in Sept 1847. There are still many original features within the rooms in the station, the big waiting room on platform 2 with its grand fireplace and wooden ceiling being just one of them. A busy scene at the Town Hall in the late 30s or early 40s. Posted by David at 1:08 PM. Carli...

Carlisle Postcards: Three City Centre Cards

http://carlislepostcards.blogspot.com/2008/02/three-city-centre-cards.html

Wednesday, February 13, 2008. Three City Centre Cards. CLICK ON IMAGE TO ENLARGE. I have posted a lot about the city centre in earlier views so these cards are just three interesting cards. A view from the Crown and Mitre Hotel in the 1950s with St. Albans Row to the Left. St. Albans Row takes its name from the Chapel that was close to this site. It was first mentioned in the Pipe Rolls of 1201 and was demolished in 1549. The street was so named in 1660. Posted by David at 12:12 PM.

Monday, October 02, 2006. Botchergate Looking South and The Carlisle Arms. Click on image to enlarge. Two cards from about 1920. This is a good view of The Carlisle Arms, also known as The Gaol Tap and The Pineapple. In 1858 it was altered in design and the carved city arms by John Kirkbride were put on top of the building. It closed in Sept. 1930 and was demolished for road widening. I remember my father telling me that prostitutes used to operate between the two sets of swing doors at the entrance.
