If you're planning on learning Japanese, the best thing you can do is buy a cheap used Palm and put on this great software. All you need is something like the Palm M130 that I got for $50 (anything with at least 8mb of Ram) and you can turn it into a pretty high quality Kanji recognition dictionary. Make sure you install the biggest dictionary they have.

The ceremony was accompanied by musicians playing traditional Japanese instruments, including the shamisen, a long three stringed instrument that is very representative of Japan. Monday, January 31, 2005. Here's an ongoing list of some of the funny food and other products that I've run across here in Japan:. Men's Spray - Super Hard. Who knew Viagra came in a can! Only $2 for an entire meal! Pocari Sweat (energy drink). Calpis (pronounced the way a Japanese person might say Cow Piss in Japanese (karu pisu) - a milky soda). Various toppings, including egg, mayo, and squid. A Chinese Fertility restaurant. And, yes, the other side of the bell is what you think it is.

Saturday, July 30, 2005. Everyone keeps asking me if I'm experiencing a lot of culture shock after moving back from Japan. Surprisingly, the answer is no. I definitely experienced culture shock after moving back from China, but I don't seem to have any problems coming home from Japan. And no, I don't know where, and I don't know what language I'll study next once I master Japanese (hah! Or more likely get comfortable enough with it to want a new challenge. Mobile vendors in Japan often drive through back-alleys singing songs about such mundane topics as vegetables, recycling, and a kerosene truck whose song sounds suspiciously like a US ice cream truck.
