Carol's Place

A blog about gardening, living and learning. Wednesday, July 29, 2015. Perle d'Azur and Gravetye Beauty. Perle d'Azur in sun and shade. Most of my garden is either vegetables or native plants now but there are some aliens that are so loved that they stay no matter what my gardening mood of the moment. These varieties of clematis are not native but it wouldn't be July without them. Because of plants like Perle d'Azur, I'll never be a native plant purist. Sunday, July 12, 2015. Hated to pull even one small...

Carol's Place: May 2015

http://www.caroldunk.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html

A blog about gardening, living and learning. Monday, May 11, 2015. Mertensia - Virginia Bluebells. Just before the leaves of deciduous trees are at their fullest, the spring ephemerals bloom. This group of woodland plants use the fact that the trees are not shading the forest floor to gain and store food for next winter. They grow quickly and bloom early just as the trees are starting to leaf out. Mertensia - Virginia Bluebells - is one of the nicest ephemerals. Have you ever seen a better blue?

Carol's Place: The Whateveritis Has Started

http://www.caroldunk.blogspot.com/2015/04/the-whateveritis-has-started.html

A blog about gardening, living and learning. Monday, April 6, 2015. The Whateveritis Has Started. It’s still cold and the garden appears dead – until you look closely. Some of the tulips have poked their noses out. Next door the snowdrops are already blooming. In the pond the marsh marigolds are beginning to leaf out and in the garden the rose stalks are starting to show green. And, as the picture attests, the Whaterveritis has started. Carol's Place: November 2014

http://www.caroldunk.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html

A blog about gardening, living and learning. Monday, November 3, 2014. Now that November is here, there are different things to see in the garden. Plants that boasted one colour in summer, now show another colour as they succumb to cold and frost. The big Sum and Substance hostas that flaunt their huge, chartreuse leaves all summer change yheir appeal as winter approaches. How wonderful they look with its Fall colours. Carol's Place: Milkweed Patch

http://www.caroldunk.blogspot.com/2015/07/milkweed-patch.html

A blog about gardening, living and learning. Sunday, July 12, 2015. I grow milkweed in a smallish patch at the front of the house, just 5 or 6 stems - waiting for a Monarch. The Milkweed Patch in the Front Garden. And all the plants grew and bloomed. Ah, the blooms! My son-in-law says there was a Monarch in the garden a while back but I didn't see it. In fact I didn't see one Monarch in my milkweed yard all season, but I did have the aroma. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile.

July will be hot. Early tomatoes will begin to ripen this month. Some tasks for July:. Cut back your asters and chrysanthemums before the middle of July. Cut them about 6 inches back to a node where a leaf emerges. That is the point where new growth will start. Cutting back will encourage branching and produce bushier plants with more flowers. Chrysanthemums have a tendency to flop over. Cutting back helps with this problem. Are you battling earwigs now? Water your hanging baskets every day. Roadsides Gu...

Jottings By Carol

September in the Garden. Ready, Set, Sow. Some Plants Won't Leave. I watched my neighbour bagging some little items that popped up in his backyard as the snow disappeared. (You know what I’m talking about! Spring Pop-ups come in two varieties: the delicious little surprises that spring brings to the garden and the not-so-pretty reminders that we live in an urban environment. Isn’t it nice to be surprised by sons-in-law? The columbines in the back are popping up. The wood poppy is showing first leaves...

Carol's Hints

http://www.caroldunk.com/hintsmain.html

Talkingclover.gif (c) Kitty Roach. My granddaughter says it looks like me! Your tomato seedlings will benefit from a little movement. The stem will be stronger and thicker. As you pass them, tickle them with your fingers! Let a small fan move the air around your plants. Air movement will decrease fungus diseases and strengthen the stems of your plants. Wondering what light intensity you have? Don't discard your banana skins. Cut them up or chop them in a food processor and work them into the soil aro...

Don’t start your seeds too early! Note the average last frost date for your area and count back according to the information on the seed package. Six to eight weeks before last frost is about right. Clean and sterilize your pots to prepare for sowing. Purchase good potting soil or fine vermiculite for starting seeds. When you can reach the garden shed, check your tools. Some may need sharpening. Some may need repairing or oiling. Trim dead or damaged branches from trees, shrubs and roses. And just for yo...
