The world is a book and those who do not travel read only a page." - St. Augustine. Wednesday, September 14, 2011. Today marks my 14. Day in Jiujiang. So, it’s about time I introduce you all to my new place of residence! I arrived in Jiujiang’s pathetic excuse for an airport at about 8:45 on Wednesday, August 31. The building where all my classes are held. I teach 7 classes every week – a pretty light load considering I’m getting paid incredibly well compared to my Chinese peers! One of my classrooms.

The world is a book and those who do not travel read only a page." - St. Augustine. Thursday, November 10, 2011. The General State of Things. I’m realizing, looking back on my blogs, that a lot of what makes it up here is very disjointed. It fluctuates between generic, touristy information and random experiences that seem noteworthy at the time. (This is probably also because I update so rarely – still working on this! It’s really pretty great being the same age as my students. Hopefully this t...Other t...

Oh yeah, you used to be my blog, and then I got side-tracked and forgot about you. Seriously, I’m GOING to get better at this whole updating thing! Maybe if I type that enough, it will work? It turns out they had paid to use a farm for the day and were preparing to cook a delicious feast for everyone! And then there’s the meat&#...

The world is a book and those who do not travel read only a page." - St. Augustine. Wednesday, November 9, 2011. A Week in Xi'an. Alright, it’s time for the vacation rundown (it’s taken me so long to write this because it’s so freaking long…sorry! Go get a snack or something, cause this is gonna take a while). I was on vacation for the National Day holiday, aka one of the ‘Golden Weeks’. This holiday celebrates the founding of the P.R. China on October 1. First meal in Xi'an. There is a large Muslim popu...

Encountering Asia and Beyond. Here's a story about one girl's travels in China and beyond. Always awaiting the next adventure. Wednesday, February 2, 2011. Two weeks into my post-graduation vacation with mom and dad in Dubai, and I'm itching to update. Oh Dubai. I don't know where to begin. I've been staying with my parents at their lovely rental villa on Palm Jumeira (Those sweet man made islands that look like a giant palm tree? Yep, that's where you can find me.) The back yard is the ocean. A painful ...

Man: "Are you in the KKK? Me (torn between disbelief and laghter): "NO. Not at all.". Man: "Yes you are, you're from Texas.". Me: "No, I'm definitely not in the KKK". Man: "If i was from Texas I would be in the KKK.". Me (curiosity getting the best of me): "Why is that? Man: "Because I hate Negroes". Man: " Do you drink beer?

Ok lets see I left off in Chengdu. We arrived at my school a couple hours later, introduced Mom to the gate guards, made sure everyone had signed off on her being there and we were all set. So Mom had left, and I was back in my room, back on my rock hard bed, and back to work. Deb aka. your momma. Hirsch in the Ph...

Encountering Asia and Beyond. Here's a story about one girl's travels in China and beyond. Always awaiting the next adventure. Wednesday, November 9, 2011. China in a nutshell. Ok I can't really put China in a nutshell. It is too big, too crazy, too varied, and I have way too small an understanding. but I can summarize my experiences thus far. Pros: It's delicious. Dumplings (Jiaozi or Baozi), Kung Pow Chicken (Gong Bao Ji Ding) and fried green beans to name a few. Pros: there are only two months left.
