European Parliament elections, June 2009
http://www.sussexineurope.org/EP_elections_09.htm
The European Movement in Sussex encourages everybody to vote in the elections on 4 June. There has been little media coverage and an insidious drip-feed of suggestion that it does not matter. But no democracy can work without involving people in trying to understand the issues and then making their preference known. That's where your vote counts. On 9 May we organised a Question time. Debate, open to the public, offered the opportunity to put key questions to candidates for the major political parties.

Richard Lawson. On how not to saw off the branch which you are standing on. Friday, May 07, 2010. Pic from Evening Standard website, thanks). The Greens are the only party who have reason to cheer their result in the 2010 election. Caroline Lucas' team in Brighton have beaten the malodourous FPTP electoral system and made history by putting the first Green MP into the Mugger of Parliaments at Westminster. So we have a hung Parliament, though not as well hung (what happened to the LibDem vote? One of the ...

Greens challenge short-term approach to Harlequin funding. April 18, 2011 at 7:12 am. It should be no surprise that Conservative Councillors for Redhill are speaking up for the Harlequin (Council Meeting, April 14). But Greens argue that not all is as it seems…. Could it be there’s an election due? Sarah Finch Green P...

A budget based on bad decisions | Jonathan Essex
https://cllrjonathanessex.wordpress.com/2011/02/12/a-budget-based-on-bad-decisions
A budget based on bad decisions. February 12, 2011 at 4:48 pm. The Council’s budget was agreed at the Council meeting last Thursday, 10 February. Here is the text of my speech at the Council meeting:. As a new councillor I assumed that big cuts would be the result. But I didn’t know we could spend our capital allowance by including ‘maintenance’ items, to keep the council tax low AND avoid the cuts. Smart accounting perhaps? But this windfall capital came from the sale of the council housing and the coun...

Rail fares soar, new trains postponed. This is the time of year when rail operators announce their fares for the coming year. Putting up rail fares while the government delays the funding for new trains is not fair. Increasing train fares is not the way to encourage a switch to rail. Yet we are set for an even higher increase of 3% above inflation for the three years from 2012. November 29, 2010 at 12:35 pm. Standing room only at anti-cuts meeting. November 29, 2010 at 12:25 pm.
