Blue Jeans and Cotton Tees. Random Thoughts from Rural America. April 17, 2015. Jan asked me on a date today. He said he would pick me up as soon as he got home from work and then we would drive through the beautiful countryside on an adventure to pick up the week old baby chicks he bought from a guy on the Swap. I like dates. I like baby chicks. I like drives through the beautiful countryside with my husband. So of course I said yes. We took off in the Geo (the little tin can on wheels that Jan drives).

Blue Jeans and Cotton Tees. Random Thoughts from Rural America. June 16, 2016. Birthday’s are made for surprises. And Angel Girl is the hardest to surprise! But this year – Pedro pulled it off! It was the Thursday night before her birthday – and she suspecting nothing. Pedro gathered up four cousins and they drove the two hours to our house stuffed in Pedro’s car. They hid the car and planned the epic surprise. Poison ivy, bug bites, photo shoots, and much laughter. A short night and a long drive. These ...

Blue Jeans and Cotton Tees. Random Thoughts from Rural America. Buddy’s Taco Popcorn. April 27, 2015. I think it’s safe to say that Buddy is addicted to popcorn. He has some at least once a day – some days twice. There are even days when he pops popcorn before the dishes from the last meal are dried. But then – he is a teen age boy and thus – a bottomless pit. Good thing popcorn is cheap and filling. He was like a mad scientist with all kinds of spices in front of him. And I do mean a kick! Drinking from...

Blue Jeans and Cotton Tees. Random Thoughts from Rural America. July 29, 2016. It was VBS week this week. Many of you are nodding right now. You know exactly what VBS week means. Busy days, late nights and exhaustion! But also fun, laughter and blessings. I worked with an incredible group of kids! A crazy bunch of teens who served with their whole hearts and kept me laughing! They memorized, rehearsed, and brought the characters of the nightly skit to life. And I was blessed. July 20, 2016. The same girl...

Blue Jeans and Cotton Tees. Random Thoughts from Rural America. March 7, 2016. True confessions – I have not yet started a single seed for this season. That’s right. Here it is the second week of March and there isn’t any sign of potting soil, seed pots or grow lights. And what’s worse – I haven’t even ordered my seeds yet. Last year’s garden was such a dismal, wet disaster that it’s hard to think about starting again. I worked so hard and got so little in return. The weeds and bugs took care of the rest.

Blue Jeans and Cotton Tees. Random Thoughts from Rural America. April 30, 2015. I’ve spent a great deal of time digging in the dirt in the last few weeks. I’ve divided African violets, re-potted house plants, and transplanted tender seedlings into larger containers. Tomatoes, peppers, broccoli, cabbage, eggplants, cauliflower. It’s a slow, meticulous and rather messy job, but it does give one a great deal of time to think. They need more room. New jobs, new classes, new friends. Roots that will help you ...

Blue Jeans and Cotton Tees. Random Thoughts from Rural America. The North Shore Reunion. August 10, 2016. We made some sweet family memories last weekend. All of Jan’s family (except for our Matt) gathered at his brother’s cabins in northern Minnesota. Grandpa, Grandma, uncles, aunts, and lots and lots of cousins. Traveling from four different states for a few days of fun in the north woods. Cousins that seldom see each other wasted no time in having epic adventures. Wild blue berry picking. July 20, 2016.

Blue Jeans and Cotton Tees. Random Thoughts from Rural America. April 25, 2016. The far back corner of our property has some of the worst fences we own. It’s wooded and overgrown with raspberry thickets and multi-flora roses. The barbed wire is old and weak. The woven wire is saggy. We patch and we fix, knowing that what we really need to do is rip the whole thing out and put in new. But it just never makes it to the top of the to-do list. It’s the weak spot in our defenses. I have personal weak spots.
