Salotto – Casa Togneri

The old plaster was removed from the ceiling so that the original beams and tiles could be exposed and sandblasted clean. Original beams before they are cleaned. Roberto and Enrico lift the original floor tiles. These were used to construct the new fireplace in the kitchen. The original floor was lifted so that steel beams could be inserted to provide additional strength. The original tiles were recycled. New reinforced floor is laid. New partition wall built to separate the salotto from the new bathroom.

The master-bedroom also had floor and ceiling 'issues'. The floor was 'supported' by 200 year old failing beams. However we were later to find out that the roof was also being supported by a make-shift 'tree trunk' which had been hidden behind panelling. As the kitchen is the focal place of the house, it was important that this room was improved. The floor sagged and needed replaced and the ceiling was also in need of substantial work. The upper part of this photo from April 2014 shows the kitchen (without any floor) with the cantina below. The red object is the original stone cooker. In 2014 Casa Togneri underwent major renovations to improve the structural integrity of the building. Many of the floors were sagging, the electricity was rudimentary and there was no bathroom (a small toilet could be accessed off the balcony). The work was expertly undertaken by Roberto and Enrico.
