This ancient Roman path, 46 miles long, begins at Thetford in south Norfolk and goes northwards to the coast near Holme-next-the-Sea. To walk a short local section, it enters Castle Acre at the foot of Bailey Street and continues up through the village and beyond to the border of Great Massingham, a distance of some four miles. 4 miles (each way). The village takes its name from the 11. Century castle built by William de Warenne. A Norman nobleman and right hand man of William the Conqueror he built Castle Acre soon after the Battle of Hastings. The flint and stone archway in the middle of the village, the Bailey Gate, was once the north entrance point to the medieval town.
