Roman Rule in Britain. Roman Rule in Britain. Castor and the surrounding area which included the town of Durobrivae, is one of the important areas of Roman Britain. But here in Castor there are important Roman remains as well, with a major Roman building on top of the hill behind the church which we call the Praetorium. He carefully drew the plans of the buildings and objects he found, engraved those illustrations and produced this wonderful book ‘The Durobrivae of Antoninus’ in 1828.

Roman Rule in Britain. Roman Rule in Britain. The Romans needed pots of all kinds for many different uses- for storing preparing and cooking food as well as for table ware. The area around Durobrivae and the Nene valley was an important centre of the pottery industry and there were probably hundreds of kilns and potters workshops scattered across the landscape. As well as the cheaper and rougher greyware the area was famous for a particular kind of decorated pottery that we now call ‘ Castor ware.
