The Casual Baker: Imitation as flattery
http://casualbaker.blogspot.com/2006/08/imitation-as-flattery-wild-oat-is.html
Is a bakery/store/café in the Glebe area of Ottawa that caters to the granola types with its vegetarian menu items and liberal (sometimes excessive) use of grains and seeds. While I’m not vegetarian, far from hippy and have been known to use plastic bags at the grocery store (sue me), I still appreciate what The Wild Oat has to offer from time to time. Of particular interest to me is the Berry Oat Bar. Although much more interested in being a bar after it was cooled and refrigerated). Berry Bar as Crisp.
The Casual Baker: Start of something good
http://casualbaker.blogspot.com/2010/08/on-to-something.html
Start of something good. Updated to include recipe on September 3, 2010* *. I think you just might be on to something here," I say to myself, marveling at the sugary crunch and berry burst of that first bite. Then I remember: I've been down this path. Good thing you're older and wiser now," I think, and smile. 1 cup brown sugar. 2 1/2 cups large-flake rolled oats. 1 1/4 cups flour. 1 teaspoon baking powder. Zest of 1 lime (you'll use the juice below). 1 cup salted butter, slightly softened. In a second l...
The Casual Baker: Past the blog before date
http://casualbaker.blogspot.com/2007/09/alfajores-past-blog-before-date-now.html
Past the blog before date. Now where were we exactly before I got sidetracked by life, work and beavertails. Right, first there was the Dulce de Leche. Followed by some Tricked Out Banana Bread. And the promise of alfajores. It seems like an eternity ago that I smacked my powdered lips on these fine specimens and, because of that, half of me is feeling a bit guilty for writing this. I have the sense that there is an expiry date. After which point you risk being perceived as disingenuous by your readers.
The Casual Baker: The more things change,
http://casualbaker.blogspot.com/2009/03/more-things-change-more-they-stay-same.html
The more things change,. The more they stay the same. It's been awhile. Too long. See this flaky pastry? Well over a month old. Not that it's still around, mind you. Nope, the baklava. Didn't last long. As the moving boxes bulged, so did our bellies. Before long, all of these tasty little triangles had disappeared and I was reduced to hiding among towers of neatly stacked boxes to scrape flecks of syrup-drenched phyllo from the pan. You think I'm kidding. 1 lemon, halved. 1 orange, halved. Whisk together...
The Casual Baker: Corn cookies
http://casualbaker.blogspot.com/2014/02/corn-cookies.html
Have I mentioned how much my parents love corn? One of the major downsides of being a delinquent blogger over a very looong period of time is that I can never remember what I've already talked about it and I can't be bothered to check. Well, whatever the case, my parents' love for corn is so prodigious, it bears repeating. Every summer, when the Chilliwack peaches and cream. If they started serving corn cookies for dessert. 225 grams butter, at room temperature. 45 grams corn flour. Divvy the dough into ...

a man, a dog, a kitchenaid, a run, and a literature class.: Pop goes the tart
http://adventuresofasuburbanamateurbaker.blogspot.com/2011/06/pop-goes-tart.html
A man, a dog, a kitchenaid, a run, and a literature class. Five seemingly unrelated firsts of many things I love. Sunday, June 26, 2011. Pop goes the tart. Nevertheless, I bought a huge jar of nutella, not because I like to eat it by the spoonful, the way I eat creamy peanut butter, (absolutely no self-control), but because I found this awesome pop tart recipe that looked so fabulous, I just had to give it a whirl. I got the recipe from here: http:/ bunsinmyoven.com/tag/breakfast/. 1 teaspoon kosher salt.

A man, a dog, a kitchenaid, a run, and a literature class. Five seemingly unrelated firsts of many things I love. Sunday, May 8, 2011. So, since I've been depriving myself of all things unhealthy and fat-laden; I wanted to make something sinfully delicious and decadent. I found the recipe to this delicious dessert here: hungry mouse. Saturday, May 7, 2011. Part of trying to be more healthy at this point is avoiding processed food whenever possible and lunchmeat at the deli counter is processed and theref...

A man, a dog, a kitchenaid, a run, and a literature class. Five seemingly unrelated firsts of many things I love. Friday, January 6, 2012. Here goes nothing. . . . So I deleted my previous post because I'm very self conscious about what people think and I suppose I just got scared. But my sis-in law-(a shout out to Colleen) has lovingly convinced me to put it back up. Idk, it's a fun pose. Drama queen or I like to call it the pod. The lunchbox, idk why? A man, a dog, a kitchenaid, a run, and a literature class. Five seemingly unrelated firsts of many things I love. Saturday, June 4, 2011. Yes, I am a cupcake snob. It's been almost a month since my last posts; as always life got in the way and things are winding down again, only to pick back up when summer school starts in a few days. Yes, I'm working summer school. What was I thinking? They did little advertising before they opened? I didn't know they were even open, Hello, Internet! Pop goes the tart.

A man, a dog, a kitchenaid, a run, and a literature class. Five seemingly unrelated firsts of many things I love. Saturday, March 26, 2011. My dad used to comment "That's Un-American." He would grumble and I would happily eat dinner for breakfast. Pain Perdu: french for lost bread, meaning it would have been thrown out if not for the ultimate save of the french toasting. I got the recipe from one of my favourite sites Allrecipes, and made a few tweaks to make it my own:. 1/2 cup white sugar. So, apparent...

The Casual Baker – A life in slices
A life in slices. April 21, 2015. By The Casual Baker. See what people are saying (3 Comments). You know you’re living well when you find yourself sitting down to Saturday brunch on a Tuesday morning. Dutch babies make it easy to live the weekend dream any day of the week all the satisfaction of pancakes minus the tedious pouring and flipping. That’s my pseudo infomercial spiel. Sold? I hope so because tomorrow’s hump day and I can’t think of a more deserving day for a Dutch baby. 2 tsp grated lemon zest.
