Catching the Sky

Thursday, October 01, 2009. This is an old photo I took of Saturn next to the moon, right at the moment of sunrise, give or take seconds. Check out the larger sizes. The timing of the photo (at sunrise) was an accident since I was photographing something else before the sun came up. I had no idea that Saturn was up there, next to the Moon. The date was December 10, 2006. I took it from Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Labels: Saturn mooon telescope daylight. Posted by Kevin Rosero at 1:06 AM. Links to this post.

Catching the Sky: April 2006

http://catchingthesky.blogspot.com/2006_04_01_archive.html

Sunday, April 30, 2006. Tonight the Moon appeared next to a naked-eye star that showed up in the camera without any binoculars or telescopes. The star was Alnath, the tip of the upper horn in Taurus the Bull. I saw Alnath with my own eyes 47 minutes after sunset and began taking some photographs. This first photo is a crop, the camera in zoom mode. Alnath, a 1.6-magnitude star, can be seen by double-clicking on the photo, just above the moon. With the camera's digital zoom:. Catching the Sky: February 2006

Monday, February 27, 2006. The star turned out to be SAO 159028, shining at 5.2 magnitude from 765 light-years away. Just above it, Ganymede was shining at 4.6 magnitude. The conjunctions with this star are still occurring and can be seen anytime that Jupiter is up. Posted by Kevin Rosero at 10:58 AM. Links to this post. Monday, February 20, 2006. Catching the Sky: May 2006

http://catchingthesky.blogspot.com/2006_05_01_archive.html

Sunday, May 28, 2006. Very exciting news tonight. I caught sight of the new moon this evening when it was only 19 hours and 19 minutes old. This is beyond what I had ever expected to see from New York, and it completely shattered my old personal record of 26 hours and 41 minutes, from June 7, 2005. But what I'm particularly happy about is getting a shot of this one, not just in the 9x63 binoculars, but in the telescope (thanks to our friend Kate's roof! SkyView Cafe has the full body of the moon setting ...

Rose and Rock: Origen and Josephus, Part 2

http://roseandrock.blogspot.com/2006/11/origen-and-josephus-part-2.html

Saturday, November 11, 2006. Origen and Josephus, Part 2. When we ask what Origen can tell us about Josephus, an important issue is whether Origen provides actual citations, or some other witness to the text of Josephus. It’s an open question whether Origen actually had a copy of Antiquities. He tells us that it was composed of twenty books and that the 18. Book contained a passage about John the Baptist (Ant. 18.5.2). Antiquities 20.8.5) . What is going on here? What kind of reason would he have? Some s...

Rose and Rock: Origen and Josephus, Part 3

http://roseandrock.blogspot.com/2006/11/origen-and-josephus-part-3.html

Wednesday, November 15, 2006. Origen and Josephus, Part 3. Each of the three times that Origen refers to what Josephus wrote about James, he uses the phrase. Adelphon Iesou tou legomenou Christou. This is an exact match with the current text of Ant. 20 rendered in William Whiston’s translation, quoted in Part 1. It has been argued that. Iesou tou legomenou Christou. Iesou ho legomenos Christos. Iesou ton legomenon Christon. Turns up 22 references to names like Jesus Christ, Simon Peter, Thomas Didymus, J...

Rose and Rock: My Jesus Puzzle review at Amazon

http://roseandrock.blogspot.com/2006/07/my-jesus-puzzle-review-at-amazon.html

Sunday, July 23, 2006. My Jesus Puzzle review at Amazon. As I wrote a few posts back, I've been composing pieces about mythicism that I hope to publish on permanent web pages rather than debating forums and blogs. I've submitted a review of. To Amazon, and what the heck, I'll publish it here, too:. And why do we not find ancient Christians, Jews, and pagans reporting or reacting to doctrines about a celestial Christ? This seems to Doherty like a polemic against a celestial Christ. The principle he is...

Rose and Rock: Obama, McCain, Palin, Biden

http://roseandrock.blogspot.com/2008/10/obama-mccain-palin-biden.html

Sunday, October 19, 2008. Obama, McCain, Palin, Biden. Stepping into other people's shoes, seeing things through their eyes, is an ideal I constantly fall short of, and I deeply admire it when I see that rare quality in a politician or anyone else. What I heard was the voice of someone who felt that the way to inspire people was through sarcasm and bite. Not ideas, nor policies, but something colder, though it was certainly capable of generating a lot of heat. She's curious about power - how to influence...

Rose and Rock: Origen and Josephus, Part 5

http://roseandrock.blogspot.com/2006/11/origen-and-josephus-part-5.html

Monday, November 20, 2006. Origen and Josephus, Part 5. Can Origen tell us anything about the famous reference to Christ in Ant. 18.3.3 63-64, the Testimonium Flavianum? I think so, though what follows is surely indirect evidence. First, the passage in question:. Perhaps it was simply common knowledge that Josephus was a Jewish historian who had never converted. But that did not ultimately prevent traditions about Josephus to proceed onward to his conversion. Posted by Kevin Rosero at 1:37 AM. Links to m...

Rose and Rock: God's Country?

http://roseandrock.blogspot.com/2006/10/gods-country.html

Tuesday, October 17, 2006. I've just finished reading an essay called " God's Country. In the September/October issue of Foreign Affairs. By Walter Russel Mead. The full essay can be read for free, and is well worth the time. Mr. Mead has laid out a historical overview of American Protestantism, dividing it into fundamentalist, evangelical, and liberal camps, and he offers some observations on the directions that the United States is now taking. The country is, then, not turning into a monster by becomin...

Tuesday, December 18, 2007. The stars are brightly shining,. It is the night of our dear Saviour's birth. Long lay the world in sin and error pining,. Till He appear'd and the soul felt its worth. A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices,. For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn. Fall on your knees! Oh, hear the angels' voices! Oh night divine, Oh night when Christ was born;. Oh night divine, Oh night, Oh night Divine. Led by the light of Faith serenely beaming,. Here come the wise men from Orient land.

Tuesday, August 12, 2008. Reflections forced by a birthday. So I find that my own capacity to understand, to listen, yes, to love, is going severely under-exercised.
