http://rfcwalters.blogspot.com/2006_10_01_archive.html
Monday, October 30, 2006. IFIP WG2.2 40th Anniversary Meeting (4): SOS. I mentioned that the main interest of the meeting for me was the clash of cultures exhibited in the talks of Lamport and Plotkin. I haven't spoken much about the second. Plotkin spoke about the history of Structur(al/ed) Operational Semantics. There is a paper about it, written with somewhat more caution than the talk. Gordon D. Plotkin. The origins of structural operational semantics. Journal. Iv) the fact that programming text beco...

Matias Menni (Universidad Nacional de La Plata, Argentina), Some developments on top of a problem posed by Carboni about the exact completion of the classifier of subterminals. This was obviously pointing to the more general problem of characterising the toposes whose exact completions are toposes. In this talk we present a...

Wednesday, December 21, 2005. 5 Sleeping Barber - Tanenbaum's informal description. I include here some quotations from Tanenbaum's book Modern Operating Systems, second edition, Prentice Hall, 2001, since without these it is difficult to discuss the correctness or otherwise of his solution. Page 130. "Our solution uses three semaphores:. Which counts waiting customers (excluding the customer who is in the barber chair, who is not waiting) ,. Which also counts the waiting customers.". Then he does an up.

Wednesday, September 27, 2006. IFIP WG2.2 40th Anniversary Meeting (3): Utility of categories. This comment arises from a question: at one of the coffee breaks a participant asked Furio Honsell. What results can be proved more easily using categories. I think it is a question category theorists should be able to respond to with easily understood examples. X*x-3*y*y = 19 has no solutions in integers (an infinite problem). Proof: consider modulo 4. The left had side can be 0,1 or 2 modulo 4 but never 3.

Friday, December 08, 2006. I have come to the conclusion that many scientific works deserves the name formiche mentali. That is to say, complications which prevent thought. If I have the courage I will give some examples. The quadro is by Dino Buzzati, from a series of fictional "ex voto". Posted by Robert Walters at 1:10 AM.
