ScienceLivesatVJ: February 2011
http://sciencelivesatvj.blogspot.com/2011_02_01_archive.html
New Blog at New School. Teaching at Madison Central. Monday, February 21, 2011. Felt Right at Home. It was an eight year drought after making the Mississippi State Physics Competition for ten straight years at Cleveland High School. (In that time, we had one first, one third place and many honorable mentions). I took them to the contest (one was not able to attend) and felt right at home and was reminded again how much I enjoy challenging kids and giving them an opportunity to do their best among the best.

ScienceLivesatVJ: March 2011
http://sciencelivesatvj.blogspot.com/2011_03_01_archive.html
New Blog at New School. Teaching at Madison Central. Wednesday, March 2, 2011. Velma Jackson MIC Project Students at Mississippi Museum of Natural Science. I finally was beginning to come out of the eclipse this year – the sun and light and hope have been largely hidden from view, and then . . . And then after a couple of weeks of extreme fatigue and chest pain and pushing myself to go to school each day, I reluctantly went to the doctor and he thinks I have pneumonia! For him to identify back in the lab.

ScienceLivesatVJ: October 2010
http://sciencelivesatvj.blogspot.com/2010_10_01_archive.html
New Blog at New School. Teaching at Madison Central. Thursday, October 21, 2010. A Second Chance for MIC. With help from two of the assistant superintendents, Dr. Polia Griffin and Ms. Charlotte Seals, transportation was arranged, and the second time around had a lot more schools and teams. The caterpillars were hiding for the most part, but we did find a few. Pictures of the day. Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Not going this way. Alexis adopts Hero for the summer. Kiwis to Caterpillars: Earthwatch Day 2
http://kiwis2caterpillars.blogspot.com/2009/08/earthwatch-day-2.html
Where in the world am I now? Thursday, August 6, 2009. After breakfast in the lobby, Dr. Dyer gave a presentation explaining his research - very fascinating. So what's his research? He collects caterpillars and catalogs information about them in five different areas of the Americas. He identifies and rears them, and looks for signs of parasitism. He is comparing rates of parasitism among the species and how different climates. A fourth trophic level! Can't wait to see the critters myself! After l lunch, ...

Kiwis to Caterpillars: Earthwatch Day 4
http://kiwis2caterpillars.blogspot.com/2009/08/earthwatch-day-4.html
Where in the world am I now? Saturday, August 8, 2009. Cave Creek Ranch is a beautiful place to stay. The owner, Reed Peters, provides a wildlife feeding station in the center of the cabin grounds. Songbird and hummingbird feeders are set. We waited anxiously outside the lab for our first assignment. In the morning, my group set out with Dr. Dave to a trailhead to do some collecting. The caterpillars often fall off the branches easily as a defense against predators (quick getaway). Any caterpillars found...

Kiwis to Caterpillars: Earthwatch Day 7
http://kiwis2caterpillars.blogspot.com/2009/08/earthwatch-day-7.html
Where in the world am I now? Tuesday, August 11, 2009. This morning I was teamed up with John and Jared to do some more plots. We drove up to Rustler Park in the Coronado National Forest of the Chiracahua Mountains. The views below were stunning as we zigzagged our way up to 8,000 ft in elevation. Angela Smilanich, Postdoc Associate at Wesleyan. University, led us to the plotting sites after a short hike further up the mountain. (More about Angela’s research later.). After lunch, we had the afternoon off.
