O, Teacher, Where Art Thou?

O, Teacher, Where Art Thou? A teacher's odyssey in rural Mississippi. Wednesday, April 18, 2012. What there is to say I have said. I’ve written over 22,000 words in my blog over the past two years. Add words spoken at the dinner table, in hospital beds, over a sweaty phone, on walks with the dogs, in the passenger’s seat, to acquaintances at hometown parties, and written in my portfolio. I always say too much and never enough. I present to you the fifteen most common words in all my blogs, revisited:.

O, Teacher, Where Art Thou?: Sleepwalking

http://www.catherineagray.blogspot.com/2012/01/sleepwalking.html

O, Teacher, Where Art Thou? A teacher's odyssey in rural Mississippi. Saturday, January 28, 2012. I must have been in about first grade when I walked in my sleep in the middle of a New Hampshire winter. We lived in the woods in an idyllic little spot on 2 Goodfellow Road with a creek that wove by our house and a cobblestone fence. It just so happened to be Robert Frost's house. It may as well have been the place where he wrote "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening.". Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

O, Teacher, Where Art Thou?: April 2011

http://www.catherineagray.blogspot.com/2011_04_01_archive.html

O, Teacher, Where Art Thou? A teacher's odyssey in rural Mississippi. Wednesday, April 6, 2011. In Christ's name, we play". My camp students are so excited. Pretty much daily all of them will ask me a question about camp or just exclaim knowingly, "I'm so excited about this summer! Here are some engagement shot glimpses of camp (in a much more serene state than when campers are present):. CHANGE - YES WE CAN. What will I change next year? It seems like every day I think of a way I could be just a bit bet...

O, Teacher, Where Art Thou?: Picking Favorites

http://www.catherineagray.blogspot.com/2011/11/picking-favorites.html

O, Teacher, Where Art Thou? A teacher's odyssey in rural Mississippi. Monday, November 14, 2011. I really like a lot of my students this year, and so it's hard to pick a favorite. Part of it is not wanting to single out a favorite. Is it the girl who can hardly sit through her Do Now because she's so anxious to show me the latest simile she's found in her book? Or the boy who always says with a smile, "Good afternoon, Mrs. Gray" every afternoon when he leaves my room? Wow, Marie had a great day!

O, Teacher, Where Art Thou?: Burned and broken but here I am

O, Teacher, Where Art Thou? A teacher's odyssey in rural Mississippi. Saturday, January 28, 2012. Burned and broken but here I am. Dear Potential MTC First-Year,. Once he was well into the school year, we had another late-night chat. "Why didn't I listen to you? He asked. We talked about how there's really no way to describe to a prospective teacher how to difficult it will be. We all want to jump in and feel it for ourselves. Why can't we just stay away? It would be unfair to say that my experience hasn...

Thursday, December 8, 2011. Blog Assignment: Describe Your Experience So Far. How can you ask me what my experience has been like so far? How can you expect me to put into words - 400 words - an experience that has literally transformed who I am as a person, as a woman, as a daughter, sister, friend? Sunday, December 4, 2011. Friday, December 2nd. Part II. Is this your handwriting? I asked as casually as possible. Yes, ma'am. I'm in a fight with C right now. We wrote it during first period.". Before goin...

I'm sorry, Teacher Corps, if it is not recommended to show your cards like that. I'm sure I should have given him a consequence. But I. Have to stop and enjoy myself (or my students) at least once daily. So has this been easier or harder than I thought? Easier. So far. Is the teacher fair? Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). There were some that I loved and some that clearly seemed thrown together at the last minute. Overall the ones that I liked the best were the ones that told a story. Below I've listed a set of guidelines that I think applies to what I viewed as the best portfolios. 3 Have a theme? Bill Clinton Comes to the Grove. These pictures were tak...

Wednesday, February 22, 2012. I prodded with accusing eyes, acknowledging their answers with little more than an indifferent nod. I asked very few questions about C's Fashion Week internship and even fewer about the others' impending job changes. Walking out I felt ashamed, but I said nothing, simply wanting to get home and go to sleep. That's why the guilt formed so quickly. I didn't deserve a card. I didn't deserve anything but a swift kick. Monday, February 13, 2012. Go ahead, honey! I was entering my...

Tuesday, December 14, 2010. Back in June, I remember thinking that the second years were too disengaged. I even got a little angry at what seemed like an unwillingness to help us. Don't they remember what it was like for them last year? They act like they're so tired. please! So how has my perspective changed? A Day in the Life. I turn in for the night and set my alarm for 5:30am intending to hit "snooze" at least six times at 5 minute increments the next morning. My alarm goes off the final time. At...

Thursday, October 28, 2010. How can the good times just end? Monday, October 18, 2010. It was suggested that journaling is an excellent way for students to assess their own strengths and needs. Out of the entire fourth chapter of Content Literacy for Today's Adolescents. I found this suggestion to be the most applicable for a writing course. By the end of the quarter, my kids knew their terms. Perhaps one of the best and most common ways to assess literacy is informally in a casual, relaxed environment&#...

Monday, October 31, 2011. No Use in Putting On a Mask. My favorite bookstore, Square Books. Over the weekend I finished The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. My friend dropped me off at the door because there was no parking to be found and, as is consistent with most things I do, I was in and out of Square Books in a matter of seconds. I knew exactly where I needed to go and I'm a regular at the store so I read off my frequent reader number and was back out the door in no time. Yeah Is it bad that I noticed?

Friday, February 3, 2012. Today was an awesome day. The kids were damn near perfect. I was able to joke around and keep things light while they worked (and boy were they really working! On their projects. I called students up one-by-one to conference and check their progress. At some point during first period I began fist bumping each child as they walked away, saying, "BOOM!
