한국 교회의 교정사목은 이미 이 땅에 복음의 씨앗이 뿌려지고 천주학쟁이로 몰린 신자들이 투옥되어 순교하면서부터 시작되었다. 천주교를 믿는 사람들을 붙잡아 죽이려는 ‘오가작통법(五家作統法)’에 의해 수많은 교우들이 체포 구금되었으며 이들에 대한 사목적 배려가 요청되었던 것이다. 이후 개항, 일제시대, 6.25사변 등을 겪으며 종교적 자유는 오히려 퇴보되어 교도소 사목도 개별적이고 산발적으로 이루어 졌다. 본격적으로 사목이 이루어진 것은 종전 후 친일파, 공산주의자, 남파 간첩, 전쟁 포로 등의 사상범들이 형무소에 수용되면서부터 이다. 1995년 1월 서울대교구 내에 사회사목부가 신설되면서 ‘교도사목위원회’로 개칭되었다가, 그해 4월 다시 ‘사회교정사목위원회’로 개칭되었다. 2003년 5월 법무부에서 사단법인이 허가되어 현재 '사단법인 천주교사회교정사목위원회'를 공식 명칭으로 사용하고 있다. 02862) 서울시 성북구 삼선교로 20길 27.
