Down a dusty lane......by Cathy Holtom: Sketchbook Sunday (catching up)
https://cathyholtomdustylane.blogspot.com/2015/04/sketchbook-sunday-catching-up.html
A blog by Cathy Holtom, an English artist living and painting in Sicily. Sunday, 26 April 2015. Sketchbook Sunday (catching up). It's been over a week since my last post, and it was one of ' those. This is the last sketch I had chance to do. an enormous fig tree in the botanical gardens. I was with the urban sketchers and the day coincided with a spring fair, so I spent lots of time looking at the stalls and not sketching. The slow food Sicilian style was excellent, lots of things to taste :-).

A blog by Cathy Holtom, an English artist living and painting in Sicily. Wednesday, 29 October 2014. Oil on mdf board 20x20cms (aprox 8x8"). It's a dark stormy day here in Sicily, although the morning started off bright and sunny! My small painting above is from a similar sunny morning, a little pear from my garden on the kitchen table with the clear early sun pouring in through the window. I used a mixture of acrylic and oil paints to get the effect of light (hopefully! Monday, 20 October 2014. I love t...

A blog by Cathy Holtom, an English artist living and painting in Sicily. Monday, 23 March 2015. Sketchbook Sunday (on Monday). I meant to post this yesterday, but due to waking very early with my Grandson I was just too sleepy! This sketch in my Moleskine is a view across the bay from a popular local ice-cream/ crèperia . It was late afternoon and the warm sun brought the colours to life. You can see my drawing of a balcony top right of the page. I have already pre-ordered my copy! 25 March 2015 at 14:59.
Down a dusty lane......by Cathy Holtom: January 2015

A blog by Cathy Holtom, an English artist living and painting in Sicily. Sunday, 25 January 2015. This is a cafè front in Oxford. It was a freezing day and I was drawn to the bright spots of warm colours in the windows. In this sketch from my photograph, I did an under painting in black to see if I could get the darks really dark. This month I am exploring what I can do with black, a colour that I rarely use. Sunday, 18 January 2015. Sunday, 11 January 2015. I spent a very pleasant Saturday morning in th...

A blog by Cathy Holtom, an English artist living and painting in Sicily. Wednesday, 25 February 2015. A Place in the Sun. Oil on wood panel 20x20cms. This is one of my cats napping in his favourite sunny spot outside the kitchen door. Purrrrfect! Sunday, 15 February 2015. I have still been continuing with my look at black and have had a go at drawing in charcoal.it's not easy to do without smudging! I also compared black watercolour paint to mixing my own darks. On the left are my Schminke watercolours.

EdiM #9: Reading Log. I keep saying I've done the last illustration for Teen Summer Reading, and then I realize there's just one more… I started getting my teen volunteers mobilized to label and stuff the "swag bags" we give away when we register the teens, and realized that the one thing I forgot to design and print to go in them is the Reading Log. Some came out well, and some not so much (there is a lot of Photoshop Elements retouching of little skinny letters here! I'm going to call this my EdiM #9, ...

Every day in whatever month this is. I dropped the ball with Every Day in May because of the painting for Daryl, but then discovered Every Day in June. So I've been giving those a shot, rather sporadically. I haven't shared anything here lately, so here are a few in a row:. Shell game"—because I'm feeling snail-like in my progress! Music"—another view of the jukebox. Clean sweep"—a quick 5-minute sketch while waiting at the car dealership. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Impressions of Italy: Pigeons. 19 Jun...
slipcover: One simple, one fussy
http://theslipcover.blogspot.com/2015/07/one-simple-one-fussy.html
One simple, one fussy. Sunday's prompt was "fall." People interpreted it in various ways- everything from sky-diving out of a plane to autumn foliage, and even the "fall" of Adam and Eve. (! I wasn't sure what to choose, but I haven't drawn any book illustrations lately, so I searched Goodreads for books with the word "fall" in the title and was reminded of this new one from Ally Carter, the first of a new series set on "Embassy Row" in London. I liked her book Heist Society. 9x9, LePen and watercolor.

I have never been an on-location (en plein air) painter. Most of my work is done on the table inside my screened-in back patio, and on the rare occasion I have drawn something on location, I always bring the drawing back to the house and paint it afterwards. But all the fabulous pictures being posted by everyone who went to the Urban Sketchers Symposium. Is the St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church on the corner of Moorpark and Lankershim. The evening of the day I finished the drawing, I couldn't resist going in with a few washes and colors, working for about an hour more, and then went to bed. Boy, was I sorry the next morning, when I saw that the color choices that looked good in low artificial light were not quite the right tints in the light of day! Season 2 for the evening. My first idea was a plain smooth wash of some neutral color, but then I thought, it's Steampunk, it's Victorian, why not do something daring? I consulted a few art...

With Timbrel and Dancing. Tuesday, June 30, 2015. The Times We Live In. I spent the last week swinging from despair to pride to grief to hope.I'm sure many of you had those same feelings as we followed the news about the Charleston shootings, the capture of the perpetrator, the debates about the Confederate flag, the statements of our President, the Supreme Court decisions, and now the funerals. Every Day in July. S challenge today was " stones. My mind immediately went to stepping stones, so I went looking for a photo that was as close as I could get to what I was picturing in my head; I have trouble drawing just from imagination, and need something concrete to step off from, pun intended. I documented this one in three stages: drawing, partial painting, finished painting. Here is the drawing:. And here is the partial painting:. July 14, 2015 at 11:34 AM. A blog by Cathy Holtom, an English artist living and painting in Sicily. Wednesday, 14 March 2018. Oil on wood 40x54cms. I have been painting. I paint most days, but recently I've been dedicating my time to some bigger paintings. (I'll post those at a later date). I got a bit bored with the small 20x20cms format so I decided to change everything around for a while. This painting is available from my Etsy shop if you've got place for it on one of your walls!
