The Aviaries at Whistling Gardens are currently expanding. By the end of 2013, 43 birds were housed on site including Peacocks, Royal Mute Swans, Egyptian Geese, 9 species of Ornamental Pheasants and Ringneck Doves. More arrivals are coming in the spring 2014. Plans are well underway to add more birds including Finches, Softbills, Hookbills (parrots) and some waterfowl. Native and Ornamental Tree Collection. Over 450 native and rare Carolinian trees are planted throughout the gardens. The ornamental tree collection focuses on uncommon species, and new varieties. Some plants are being tested and evaluated for the first time in Canada at Whistling Gardens to determine hardiness, ornamental value and economic production viability. The conifer collection now surpasses 2,500 different species, hybrids and cultivars. This collection is the largest in the world on display for the public. Many specimens in the collection are the only ones in the country. The Conifer Garden has approximately 1,100 specimens but conifers are found in nearly every garden. This garden looks wonderful in all season. It is nearly an acre of alpine plants, succulents, cacti, perennials, dwarf conifers, and Asian maples are nestled in between locally hand picked limestone and granite. Our fossil collection is also located in this garden. It contains well-preserved specimens of plants and small aquatic life when this area was an ancient sea from the Lower Devonian and Upper Silurian Periods. Click the thumbnail for larger image. Only outdoor washrooms are available at this time. The Redbud offers beverages and light prepackaged snacks. Please keep personal belongings locked in your vehicle. Guests are welcome to bring their own picnic (no alcohol), blankets and chairs and find a cozy spot throughout the gardens. There is a designated picnic seating area near The Redbud, as well as benches throughout the gardens. Maps are available at the Guest Services booth at the entrance of the gardens. Most gardens exhibit annuals for all season interest and beauty. Currently 4,000 annuals are planted throughout the gardens. Some 3,000 perennials have been planted and represent hundreds of varieties and species. The Iris collection has greatly expanded to some 100 varieties and species and can be found in nearly every garden. They are at their best around the end of May.
