The Process starts with a cedar tree. Traditionally the Northwest Coast Natives stripped the bark from live, standing trees. The best time of year to gather bark is in the spring and summer when the sap is flowing. The best trees were on a hillside so a long strip could be pulled from the uphill side. The indigenous peoples left enough bark on the trees to keep the tree growing, and some old trees remain today with signs of bark removal still evident. read more. It allowed the employment of draft animals, the lashing together of objects, net making, fishing, harpooning and many other tasks.
