Forest Management

What is Forest Stewardship Planning? A Stewardship Plan helps you accomplish, in the best way possible, what you want to do with your property, whether or not that includes timber harvesting. The goal is to sustain healthy and productive forests for people and for wildlife. The program includes a written management plan for your forestland. The full-size images are available by clicking on the small thumbnail image. If you do use these graphics on a web page or a publication we would appreciate an acknowledgement. Thanks. Wildlife Management
http://www.nollsforestryservices.com/wildlifemanagement.htm
Most landowners do not realize the ecological services provided by the variety of wildlife inhabiting their forest. Each wildlife species performs a specific function in the ecosystem that directly benefits other living organisms, including people. Insect control is one of the major benefits of wildlife habitat.

Timber Appraisals
http://www.nollsforestryservices.com/timberappraisal.htm
A timber appraisal will provide the landowner with an estimated value of what their timber is worth at the present time. Prices of timber fluctuate with the supply, demand, and species of timber available. To complete an accurate timber appraisal an inventory of the woodland is taken. The number of trees and their measurements are kept on tally sheets, and then converted into actual volumes for each tree species marked. The value of each species is then determined by the market price at that time.

Forest Improvement

I very rarely recommend diameter limit cuts (cutting based on tree diameter only), because I feel that this removes too many trees per acre for tree farming purposes. It is important to retain seed source of species needed to achieve long-term management objectives. Avoid intermediate cuttings that may increase interfering plant communities, such as grasses and ferns, or be prepared to treat interfering vegetation before the regeneration cut.
