Celebrate this day! in Vanuatu!

27 months as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Vanuatu. Friday, October 7, 2011. Less Than 3 Weeks Left. With less than 3 weeks left, it is hard to believe that my time on Tanna is really coming to a close. Every conversation with folks here usually starts with a “oh sorry…yu stap go now” or the equivalent in local language. Talk about drawing out the goodbye. Yesterday, two sixth grade girls brought me something I thought I wasn’t going to get to enjoy this year: a ripe mango. It was a delicious mango. In term...

Celebrate this day! in Vanuatu!: April 2010

http://www.celebratethisdayinvanuatu.blogspot.com/2010_04_01_archive.html

27 months as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Vanuatu. Monday, April 5, 2010. A typical moment during the lunch hour: students gathered on my little porch, checking each other for lice. Making a nice little pile of lice on Raio's skirt, to be eaten after. Because if you eat the lice, then I guess you can be sure they won't end up back in your hair. Now I am approaching week 8 of the 2010 school year at Loukatai School. That’s halfway to the end of term 1. But oh, those were the days… On February 12. So much fo...

http://www.celebratethisdayinvanuatu.blogspot.com/2011/03/changing-lives-one-banana-cake-at-time.html

27 months as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Vanuatu. Sunday, March 6, 2011. Changing lives, one banana cake at a time. My happiest moment of February 14. The first day of the new school year in Vanuatu was when I saw 9-year-old Meriam show up for 1. It was my reminder of a Happy Valentine, since the holiday is not actually celebrated here. Meriam is the only kid in the village who hadn’t been going to school simply because she didn’t want to. So that was it. Why would anyone force her? So I kept bringing up ...

http://www.celebratethisdayinvanuatu.blogspot.com/2011/06/service-not-slavework.html

27 months as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Vanuatu. Thursday, June 23, 2011. Today (Wednesday June 21st) as part of the 3. Grade “agriculture” lesson, the teacher asked the students to all bring stems/branches of food plants to school. After lunch they gathered in front of my house and proceeded to create a garden. To call it a lesson isn’t really fair… These kids already know everything there is to know about gardening on Tanna. They went straight to business. The whole process took about an hour. It was m...

Celebrate this day! in Vanuatu!: January 2011

http://www.celebratethisdayinvanuatu.blogspot.com/2011_01_01_archive.html

27 months as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Vanuatu. Wednesday, January 26, 2011. The farewell cake was a big hit. Most of the kids ate 3 pieces of frosted chocolate cake made up on "hospital hill." The kids will all surely remember each other. They will remember their black and white friends, and they will remember their black and white cake. Monday, January 24, 2011. My return to Tanna Island has been a momentous one. It was all quite adorable and a pleasant afternoon. It was a shaky night to say the least.

27 months as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Vanuatu. Friday, October 29, 2010. The Never Ending WAKA WAKA. Friday, October 1, 2010. A Library in Loukatai. A small view of the small Library at Loukatai:. This weekend the one and only Doctor on Tanna (who is here on behalf of VIVA, a Canadian NGO that provides a doctor every 6 months to Tanna) stopped by Loukatai with his family, and asked if I wanted to join them on a ride across the island to a black sand beach. Nelson was telling me about his Magic Tree Hou...
