The Fifty Foot Blogger: December 2008
http://thefiftyfootblogger.blogspot.com/2008_12_01_archive.html
The Fifty Foot Blogger. Sunday, December 28, 2008. Sunday Music: Save the Children. While looking for videos of Marvin Gaye's live performances, I stumbled across this beauty. The nine minute clip of Gaye performing "What's Goin' On" and "What's Happening Brother," is interspersed with footage shot mostly on the south side of Chicago. The contributor's caption states that it was an excerpt from an out-of-release documentary, Save the Children. More from Save the Children. Was the unifying theme for the C...

Carried a few paragraphs on the closing of Manny's Music, located on 48th street. For over 60 years, the store was a mandatory stop for visiting guitarists, who congregated there to try out the latest axe. The family returned to Los Angeles in 1968, and stepfather and son formed the band Spirit. Posted by The Fifty Foot Blogger.

The Fifty Foot Blogger: February 2010

The Fifty Foot Blogger. Sunday, February 21, 2010. Sunday Music: More Merle. Kristofferson, who never was much of a vocalist, still couldn't sing. When he started in on "Me and Bobby McGee," it was unrecognizable through the first verse. On the other hand, Haggard's voice was still beautiful, especially considering that he's in his 70s and has had part of a lung removed. Also notable was the guitar-picking of 17 year-old son, Benion. The kid is phenomenal! Posted by The Fifty Foot Blogger. Sol Hoopii poi...

The Fifty Foot Blogger. Saturday, October 24, 2009. The sunflower that ate Chicago. Elston Avenue, at sunset. A cluster of Schlitz and Stege brewery houses still stand within blocks of each other in the Pilsen/Little Village area. As we took pictures of a former Stege house, a trio of middle-school-aged girls hung out of the windows of an apartment building across the street. "Is this a famous bar? Tied Houses" Forgotten Chicago. [Link]. Posted by The Fifty Foot Blogger. Links to this post. Oh dear God&#...

The Fifty Foot Blogger: Sunday Music: The Madison
http://thefiftyfootblogger.blogspot.com/2010/03/sunday-music-madison.html
The Fifty Foot Blogger. Sunday, March 7, 2010. Sunday Music: The Madison. I've been out of music listening mode the last two weeks, but rummaged around in my YouTube favorites for a few long-neglected clips. The Madison Dance was invented by William "Bubbles" Holloway at the LVA Club in Columbus, Ohio, in 1957. It was picked up by a dance/variety show in Baltimore in 1960, and the craze soon spread across the country. The Madison was lovingly recreated in the 1988 film Hairspray. Antoine et les problemes.

The Fifty Foot Blogger. Sunday, March 29, 2009. Sunday Music: The Baldwin Brothers. In the last month, I've had the misfortune to hear some really bad sampling. Bad sampling happens when the artist has little depth or breadth of musical knowledge and/or lacks the talent to actually compose. Just to cleanse the palate. I'm not sure why I purchased Cooking With Lasers. Funky Junkyard," "Urban Tumbleweed" and "Dream Girl". Cooking With Lasers (at cdbaby.com) [Link]. Posted by The Fifty Foot Blogger. Posted ...

The Fifty Foot Blogger. Sunday, November 22, 2009. Sunday Music: Laura Nyro. I picked up a stack of music last week, including a compilation of Dusty Springfield's A and B sides, and Laura Nyro's 1971 album with Labelle, Gonna Take a Miracle. Wickham is an intriguing person: a closeted (for most of her career) lesbian who made it in the mostly-male business of pop music. At the age of 20, she produced and booked one of the first television pop music shows in England, Ready, Steady, Go! 1969) had a limite...

The Fifty Foot Blogger. Wednesday, September 23, 2009. Fall Back in Fall #2. Did you notice the sky and the light after sunset on Tuesday? The side of a delivery van, a pile of construction rubble, an empty storefront; they all glowed like coals. Posted by The Fifty Foot Blogger. Links to this post. Sunday, September 20, 2009. Sunday Music: Fall Back in Fall. Mexican wrestling masks though- perfect! Radio show. Country music had become the soul music of poor, white America. The sunny side we also may view.
