Practice sliding up and down on the A string; don't use the bow; just with fingers in first position. Make sure thumb stays behind the second finger. Keep more space between the first and second finger; stretch. In shifting, loosen the thumb a bit. Make sure thumb and left hand can clear the top of the cello in high notes.
