cellular senescence blog: December 2007
http://ageing-research.blogspot.com/2007_12_01_archive.html
A blog for those interested in the physiological and pathological impact of senescent cells. Why do we Age? Definition of normal Ageing. The following is a description setting out five criteria’s for ageing, as proposed by Strehler (1962). Cumulative: Effects of ageing increase with time. Universal: All members of a species display signs of ageing. Progressive: Ageing is a series of gradual changes. Intrinsic: Changes would take place even in a “perfect” environment. http://ageing-research.blogspot.com/2008_04_01_archive.html
A blog for those interested in the physiological and pathological impact of senescent cells. Cellular senescence in disease states. In some instances, cellular senescence is thought to contribute to the development and/or progression of age-related disease, but in others, the presence of disease may accelerate the accumulation of senescent cells. Whether cellular senescence is the cause or the consequence of some diseases is yet to be answered. Replicative Senescence in vivo. 69 yr) donor did display pos...

A blog for those interested in the physiological and pathological impact of senescent cells. The removal of senescent cells using therapeutic agents. For a drug to exert its desired effect it needs to be in physical contact with its physiological target, such as a receptor. 2) Rate of elimination of the drug-carrier conjugate. 3) Rate of release of free drug at the non-target site. 4) Rate of delivery of drug-carrier conjugate to the target site. 5) Rate of release of free drug at target site. 6) Rate of...

http://ageing-research.blogspot.com/2008_02_01_archive.html
A blog for those interested in the physiological and pathological impact of senescent cells. Replicative capacity of cells from disease states. Another group investigating atherosclerosis took vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC) from human atherosclerotic plaques and grew them in culture (Bennett et al, 1998). Results showed that VSMCs taken from plaques have lower rates of proliferation and underwent senescence earlier than cells derived from normal vessels. Replicative capacity of tissues from normal h...

A blog for those interested in the physiological and pathological impact of senescent cells. Why do senescent cells accumulate in tissues? If the accumulation of senescent cells are so detrimental to the tissues in which they reside, why haven’t we evolved mechanisms to remove them? The answer is that we probably have, but the mechanism which removes them from the tissues becomes impaired as with age. To understand how this removal system may work, we need to look at the phenotype of senescent cells.
cellular senescence blog: Atypical senescent states: Endoplasmic Reticulum stress induced senescence
http://ageing-research.blogspot.com/2015/03/atypical-senescent-states-endoplasmic.html
A blog for those interested in the physiological and pathological impact of senescent cells. Atypical senescent states: Endoplasmic Reticulum stress induced senescence. Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress may also promote a senescent-like response. The accumulation of unfolded proteins in the ER triggers a stress-signaling pathway that can result in cell cycle arrest mediated by p27 (Han et al. 2013) and the p53/47 isoform (Bourougaa et al. Labels: endoplasmic reticulum stress. The main focus of ageing res...

http://ageing-research.blogspot.com/2010_07_01_archive.html
A blog for those interested in the physiological and pathological impact of senescent cells. Cell-type exclusive senescent phenotype (CESP). Examples of CESP are currently limited because the majority of work involving senescence has been carried out on fibroblasts with less emphasis on cell-types linked to disease development. Matsushita H, Chang E, Glassford AJ, Cooke JP, Chiu CP, Tsao PS (2001) eNOS activity is reduced in senescent human endothelial cells: Preservation by hTERT immortalization. Ci...
cellular senescence blog: Atypical senescent states: Metabolic stress-induced senescence
http://ageing-research.blogspot.com/2015/03/atypical-senescent-states-metabolic.html
A blog for those interested in the physiological and pathological impact of senescent cells. Atypical senescent states: Metabolic stress-induced senescence. Metabolic stress, defined here as a combination of aerobic glycolysis and mitochondria dysfunction can potentially trigger a senescent state. All organisms that use aerobic glycolysis form reactive acyclic. Gal activity (Sejersen and Rattan, 2009). Further studies (Larsen et al. Taken from: Cellular Senescence: From Growth Arrest to Immunogenic Conve...
