Any teenagers or anyone else desperate for a car? May 26th, 2010 at 10:18 PM. We have a functional 1997 Mazda Protégé in the the garage, which we need to be rid of rather soon. Runs perfectly well and will start, stop, and go on command. Engine and brakes and transaxle check out well. Has been well-maintained for its whole life. Suspension is healthy relatively quiet and it's a smooth ride. Tires in good condition. Fuel economy on par with a small car of that sort. I could tease 25-30 MPG out of it.
