The Endurance/Shackleton chantey went over extremely well at the Chantey Sing- a couple of people professed to find it quite moving, and the folks at the afterparty even requested an encore. I am always talking up the chantey sing to people, and it is. I recently acquired a Kindle (second generation); the price was right, and I've been hankering after an e-ink reading device for a while. I'm sure a lot of you already know this, but man, LUSH has some damned effective salesladies. I wandered in with a vague idea of buying something small and nice-smelling, and each time one person finished enthusiastically demonstrating one of their products (sparkly effervescent bath bombs that turn your bathwater indigo! Solid shampoo that actually lathers! Here, have a four-minute 'hand treatment! But I have coffee jello, so that's good. Odd gelatin flavors are easy and fun to experiment with!

Yesterday at 0430, I was putting together the final bits and pieces of equipment for a day trip to Rainier to install (well, help install) a GPS sensor on Winthrop Glacier. Because of my habit of bicycling and walking a lot, and attending karate class twice a week, I occasionally flatter myself by thinking of myself as relatively physically fit. Going on this sort of trip with my fellow grad students always reminds me, in no uncertain terms, how relative. Much, and as my officemate pointed out someone's.
