Other local history websites. Saturday, 28 February 2015. This plaque was placed on Goat Island in 2007. The text, now nearly illegible, reads:. In 1654, during the occupation of Stornoway by Cromwellian forces, Goat Island was used as a fort to protect the harbour from attack. The main armoury comprising two great guns and four sliding pieces was taken from the old Stornoway Castle. RCAHMS suggests that there was a fort or citadel in the Point Street area of Stornoway. During my recent visit to South Uist, I came across a house called Tipperton (Tobar Tiobairt), near the Polochar Inn on the extreme southwestern point of the island. Searching the Internet revealed the Gaelic name, and the story of human remains found in a crouching position. From Struileag. His wife Margaret followed him out of this world in 1996, aged 93. Comunn Eachdraidh Ùig (Uig Historical Society) was established in 1984 and covers the area from Scaliscro to Brenish in the Uig district of Lewis, including the islands off the west coast. The area includes Ardroil, where the Lewis Chessmen were found. Well-informed local volunteers run the museum. They welcome visitors and will guide them to some of the many sites of historical interest in Uig. Registered Scottish Charity SC042503.
