From My Viewpoint: Pursuing the Good Life by Christopher Peterson
http://frommyviewpoint.blogspot.com/2014/12/pursuing-good-life-by-christopher.html
Where I share thoughts and images on the internet. Sunday, December 28, 2014. Pursuing the Good Life by Christopher Peterson. I was enthusiastic when I started reading this book. Truthfully, it got to be a bit of a slog in the middle - even a little annoying at times. It often seemed the author just rambled on (like professors sometimes do) from one odd topic to another. I was looking for something concrete, and I didn't see it all that often. BUT,. And How can we pursue a good life? View my complete pro...

Where I share thoughts and images on the internet. Tuesday, July 30, 2013. Lost Christianity (by Jacob Needleman). I stumbled across this book by total accident one night many months ago. I read through several reviews and thought the book might have some real answers to questions I'd been asking a long time without any luck. Took me a while to get to it, but finally I started. The book has value, but it was a very frustrating read at the same time. Left me unsettled and somewhat unsatisfied.

Where I share thoughts and images on the internet. Wednesday, November 20, 2013. The Limpopo Academy of Private Detection (by Alexander McCall Smith). I usually read the latest book from this series - the No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency series - not long after publication. Took me longer to get to this one. In fact, a new one has come out before I got finished with this one. Well, at least I don't have to wait for the next one now. What's all this about the Limpopo Academy of Private Detection? And speakin...

From My Viewpoint: Realware by Rudy Rucker
http://frommyviewpoint.blogspot.com/2015/05/realware-by-rudy-rucker.html
Where I share thoughts and images on the internet. Friday, May 01, 2015. Realware by Rudy Rucker. This is the fourth/final installment in the Ware Tetralogy. Overall, I enjoyed the series - though it is a bit bizarre. It is a lot of fun, though it has its serious sides if you pay attention. This fourth book is not as good as the earlier three, but it does close things out for the series. Some people may not find the closure here all that satisfying - I'm on the fence. Where I share thoughts and images on the internet. Sunday, September 14, 2014. Immortality by Stephen Cave. The title of this book says a lot. Immortality: the Quest to Live Forever and How It Drives Civilization. Certainly made me stop and take a look. Maybe they will explain the soul. Who knows? This would have been a five out of five star book if not for the authors rush to a conclusion. The best I can give it is four. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Immortality by Stephen Cave. Where I share thoughts and images on the internet. Sunday, March 23, 2014. Wetware by Rudy Rucker. This is the second book in the Rucker's Ware Tetralogy. I think I know, but I am not sure how to explain it. A biological computer perhaps? In any case, in this book, the robots (boppers) make a sort of human-bopper hybrid. The humans, with a few exceptions, are not amused and take extreme action. This includes killing the hybrids and infecting the boppers with a mold. Maybe the third book will tell us.

Where I share thoughts and images on the internet. Saturday, April 11, 2015. Mr Bones by Paul Theroux. Twenty short stories of good variety. Nice lengths for the most part for an average commute on bus or train - maybe need the round trip to get through some of the longer ones. Will keep you entertained and might even provoke deep thinking in some cases. My favorite quote from the book is, "forgiveness is final". That's something to ponder. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Where I share thoughts and images on the internet. Thursday, January 02, 2014. Big Data by Mayer-Schonberger and Cukier. Big data is the new "big thing". A good book here to get a basic understanding about what is going on with it. The one word chapter titles give you a good idea of what to expect in the book: Now, More, Messy, Correlation, Datafication, Value, Implications, Risks, Control and Next. Overall, I thought the book was well done and do recommend it. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Where I share thoughts and images on the internet. Friday, November 09, 2012. This is a book by Orhan Pamuk, a winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature. It is about the city of Istanbul and Pamuk's life there as a child and as a young man. Frankly, I was a little glad to get to the end. I'm not sure I'd recommend this book to just anyone. Where I share thoughts and images on the internet. Wednesday, December 11, 2013. Dr Futurity by PKD. I read this novel in an ACE double where it was paired with the Unteleported Man. Both are by PKD. I reviewed the Unteleported Man previously. ACE doubles are something I had never seen before; this one was from 1972 and is kind of retro cool. The group Parsons tries to help has a plan to alter history. What is it and will it succeed? Does Parsons ever get back to his own time? I thought the book was well...
