Monday, July 29, 2013 by Andrew Mitchell. It’s been a little while since the last entry on Tyne and Beer Metro and things haven’t exactly been going to plan for the north east’s premier light rail system… For the last few months passengers have been forewarned about the forthcoming transportocalypse of a 27 day shutdown of a sizeable stretch of the system. Posted on Tuesday, March 26, 2013 by Andrew Mitchell. When the Interchange opened in 1981, it provided a transport hub to a town already in decline. The new effortless Metro was seen as clean and futuristic but would it suffer the same fate of the town’s previous stab at futuristic design? Until very recently Gateshead was home to Trinity Square, a shopping centre and multi-storey car park. Brutalist in design, the sprawling concrete structure dominated the town’s skyline. Just across the road from The S...

Sunday, October 13, 2013 by Andrew Mitchell. Callerton Parkway station opened on 17 November 1991, when the line was extended to Newcastle Airport. It’s not located near any significant housing estates (or anything in particular for that matter) and as a result is one of the Metro stations with the lowest passenger numbers. Due to its decent road links, the station is used as a transfer point to buses travelling to. Thursday, August 8, 2013 by Andrew Mitchell. Tuesday, August 6, 2013 by Andrew Mitchell.

This singular stretch of road that powers through Gateshead into South Tyneside is probably best known outside the region as an early stage of the Great North Run, where tens of thousands of professional and would-be runners pound the tarmac as part of the world’s biggest half. Posted on Tuesday, March 5, 2013 by Andrew Mitchell. South Gosforth serves as a busy interchange on the Metro as many passengers change between Green line services to/from the Airport and Yellow line services to/from the Coast. During peak periods the station sees an intensive service with trains operating up to every 3 minutes to and from Newcastle city centre. Posted on Friday, May 17, 2013 by Andrew Mitchell. Just a few minutes’ ride from Regent Centre you arrive at Wansbeck Road. Originally opened in May 1981, it is built on an embankment above Wansbeck Road, which is the border of West Gosforth and Fawdon. The platforms aren’t exactly easy on the eye. It’s only when you reach stations such as this does it become apparent that the architectural splendour of the Moscow Underground was not used for inspiration. We caught Wansbeck Road on a particularly bad day...
