Editorials of a Scientist Political. August 27, 2014 in Chemistry. Th’ Gaussling has been dabbling in the strange land of cheminformatics. Lately. I’m trying to develop some productivity tools in on various platforms to make chemical information more accessible to fellow staff members. One particularly useful tool is the InChI. Or International Chemical Identifier. The InChI. If you hate using the Java based drawing module in SciFinder, an InChI string or SMILES string can be used instead. Just open ...

Ambivalent Engineer: Window 8.1 is unusable on a desktop
http://ambivalentengineer.blogspot.com/2014/04/window-81-is-unusable-on-desktop.html
Wednesday, April 23, 2014. Window 8.1 is unusable on a desktop. For the last two years I've been doing a lot of SolidWorks Simulation on my Lenovo W520 laptop. This thing has been great. But I've started doing fluid flow simulations, and it's time for more CPU than a 3.3 GHz (limited by heat load) dual core Sandy Bridge. I have learned that Windows 8.1 is unusable for a workstation. Metro apps are full screen. Catastrophe. When I click on a datasheet PDF in Windows 7, it pops up in a window and I stick i...

http://walkerramblings.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html
Thoughts on the state of the world from David Cotton. Might also include some walking. Monday, 1 September 2014. Last year was perhaps a record for coastal walkers, with several people walking the coast in one go or in sections. However the last couple of months have been fairly quiet. David Higgins finished his walk in July, meaning Peter Hill. Was left attempting the coast in one go. He can be followed on Facebook. And he has a fundraising page. The best of luck to him. Yet another nonproliferation blog: mostly. Laquo; Ukraine and impotence. Iron Domes and Maginot Lines. March 4, 2014 by Markus. In the Wall Street Journal came to my attention today. In the article it is reported that Saudi Arabia and other parties supporting the anti-Assad opposition intend to start supplying the rebel forces “for the first time Chinese man-portable air defense systems, or Manpads.”. The key recognition element is the cube-like feature at the forward end of the launch-tube. You are comm...

Cecil the Lion Thoughts – Gray3’s Thirdsphere
https://gray3.wordpress.com/2015/07/31/cecil-the-lion-thoughts
July 31, 2015. Cecil the Lion Thoughts. It saddens me that such a magnificent animal was killed in such a terrible fashion. Now before anyone flies off the handle, let me clear about some things. In general I support hunters and hunting, but I do so based on some principles hunters in my family have had for generations:. Hunt only what you need. Do not overhunt. You eat what you kill and not let go to waste the rest of the remains. Respect the animal you hunt. Do not let an animal suffer. You are comment...

Earth Space Continuum: February 2007
http://spacecontinuum.blogspot.com/2007_02_01_archive.html
A blog about all things related to the development of space and its relevance to our life on Earth. Tuesday, February 20, 2007. To answer the question, I've come up with the following list of. Reasons why aerospace projects so frequently push the limits of performance and capability:. A commercial system should at least be equivalent in price and performance to competing systems, for example the Boeing 777 as compared with the Airbus A340. Fortunately there are cases where pushing the envelope is unneces...
