The Chamurthi or Spiti Pony is indigenous to the Pin Valley which is found in a Buddhist tribal district called Spiti. Located in the state of Himachal Pradesh in north-western India, Spiti is a unique and isolated area – a high altitude desert which is closed off from the rest of the country for 6 months of the year by snow on the high passes which access this region. The Chamurthi is one of four recognized indigenous horse breeds in India. It is thought they originally came from Tibet, which is likely as the Tibetans have a very similar type of pony. This area has traded with Tibet for centuries and horses were obviously a main form of transportation as well as highly prized possessions. They are still taken to local fairs every year, as they are well known as excellent riding ponies. Trip to Pin Valley.

I ran down to our campsite where my guide announced that there were some men from Bhutan, the mountainous Buddhist kingdom to the northeast of India, who had come to buy the famous Chamurthi ponies. Being a horse lover since childhood, I couldn't possibly miss this sight and ran down the hill to the town. I then spent several days in this area trekking, camping and visiting some of the small villages in the Pin Valley which are not yet accessible by road.
