Youth Poet Laureate Program. Youth Poet Laureate Program. By Obasi Davis, age 17. Restlessly propelled bus tour through poverty's playpen. Inhaling the vile stench of minimum wage and food-stamps. Of $8/hr in a $960 cramped studio apartment. Fed by cal fresh's moldy. You can't see your reflection in these dark waters. Packed blacks on boats. But these ones float. Where row house windows bear constricting iron bars. And beat with the melodic music of despair like imprisoned hearts. The girl next to me.

Youth Poet Laureate Program. Youth Poet Laureate Program. By Stephanie Yun, age 18. Like wind caressing wayward leaves, he grasps my hands. Fearful of letting them return to the earth. At minimum, my boyfriend. Must remind me once every two weeks. That I can't make love to him buried beneath flowerbeds. Don't make proper pillows for survivors of suicide. Because as mentally ill as I think I am,. We're supposed to wake up side-by-side on a Tempur-Pedic someday. In distress, my body. Then who will want me,.

Youth Poet Laureate Program. Youth Poet Laureate Program. By Oliva Hoffman, age 16. You had big hands. Big hands that draped over mine and wrapped around my hips. And fingertips rough and callused tracing ribcages. You were a man. not a boy but a man. That reminded me of my father. Who disappeared when i was a girl. Like shadows melting into fog. You had big hands. That were warm and leathery. And had lines that told stories. Like fallen trees i used to climb on top of. In the forest with my father.
