at the turning point of time: Holding on to a trend: the use of ultrasound in pregnancy
http://attheturningpointoftime.blogspot.com/2012/10/published-in-birth-and-babies-volume-1.html
At the turning point of time. Monday, October 29, 2012. Holding on to a trend: the use of ultrasound in pregnancy. Published in "Birth and Babies" volume 1. Spring 2012. The use of ultrasound has become common practice in pregnancy and delivery so common that providers often don’t think to discuss its use. However, a large body of research questions its safety. In her book Gentle Birth, Gentle Mothering. In his article Ultrasound, More Harm Than Good. In Journal of Nurse-Midwifery, Doris Haire writes:.

Radical Midwife: To all Oregon mothers!
http://radicalmidwife.blogspot.com/2010/05/to-all-oregon-mothers.html
Sane midwifery has become a radical thought. Wednesday, May 19, 2010. To all Oregon mothers! Eta: See my post on clarification of this issue here. We need EVERYONE in Oregon to write letters in support of keeping birth choices open for birthing families! The Board of Direct Entry Midwifery. The things that they are focusing on are:. There are board meetings being held on each of these topics (some of which the dates have already passed). Upcoming meetings can be found here. And are as follows:. You don't...

at the turning point of time: October 2008
http://attheturningpointoftime.blogspot.com/2008_10_01_archive.html
At the turning point of time. Thursday, October 9, 2008. The falling leaves and their melancholy. Did i read this somewhere - in one of steiner’s lectures, or another anthroposophic reading - or is there something melancholic about autumn? Four seasons, four elements, … four temperaments? Winter, with all of the earth’s energy turned inwards, is a season for flegmatism - a season of slowing down, and doing by the fireside. It - in de midst of the color. Late at night, that feeling of solitude. Late at ni...

at the turning point of time: 10 cm ~ just a metric system measure that means what?!?!?
http://attheturningpointoftime.blogspot.com/2011/01/10-cm-just-metric-system-measure-that.html
At the turning point of time. Sunday, January 23, 2011. 10 cm just a metric system measure that means what? Snowy white and sunny freezing day in these hills, and I thought i'd catch up on some reading: the midwife's thinking blog regarding anterior lips. Made me think a lot about birth. Ok. Perhaps it already was on my mind. Regardless, i've been thinking. My first thought was: "How would we know there's an anterior lip? However, the totally irrelevance of vaginal exams is is a hard reality to face, whe...

at the turning point of time: st john's tide and the height of the summer
http://attheturningpointoftime.blogspot.com/2011/07/st-john-tide-and-height-of-summer.html
At the turning point of time. Saturday, July 9, 2011. St johns tide and the height of the summer. More recently, one of my friends has unexpectedly lost her husband. Two weeks later, the twins they were going to adopt were born. I have witnessed my friend going through these extreme emotions daily, navigating them at the best of her abilities, with the support she has (which is enormous, fortunately.). Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Emptiness of the lonely [a post from january 2009. Ever since I wat...

Radical Midwife: Clarification
http://radicalmidwife.blogspot.com/2010/05/clarification.html
Sane midwifery has become a radical thought. Friday, May 21, 2010. Because I think there may be some confusion from my last blog entry. I wanted to clarify something. The rule changes that are being proposed will not make breech, twins, VBACs. And postdates 'illegal' or absolute risk factors for licensed midwives. They will still be 'allowed' to attend them out of hospital. But, they are creating stringent criteria in each of those categories, proposing to dictate under what terms a VBAC. Twins, breeches...

Radical Midwife: Where are the mothers?
http://radicalmidwife.blogspot.com/2011/01/where-are-mothers.html
Sane midwifery has become a radical thought. Sunday, January 16, 2011. Where are the mothers? I live in a city with a hospital that has roughly 3,500 births every year. Their cesarean rate is very hard to find (as are most hospitals'), but based upon information from some of the doctors and nurses that work there, it is estimated to be around 50% (some say closer to 60%). The rate is, in part, this high because the hospital doesn't "allow" VBACs. Though not every provider does. Where are the mothers?

Radical Midwife: October 2009
http://radicalmidwife.blogspot.com/2009_10_01_archive.html
Sane midwifery has become a radical thought. Friday, October 23, 2009. I am currently pumping milk once a day for donation for a sick adopted baby girl. I was nearly out of breastmilk. Freezer bags, so when I was at the grocery store yesterday, I picked some up. The grocery store is a large chain store, with one of those coupon machines that spit out coupons for you when you check out based upon what you purchased. Thinking of supplementing your breastfed baby? So, not only were they targeting me because...

Radical Midwife: September 2009
http://radicalmidwife.blogspot.com/2009_09_01_archive.html
Sane midwifery has become a radical thought. Wednesday, September 16, 2009. It is a sobering fact that birth and death are closely related. Flip sides of the same coin. Thankfully, birth and death are usually spaced far apart in one's life. Not always, though. This month, two of my dear clients have lost their babies, much too soon. Both babies passed from their bodies within 9-10 days of each other. The first in the 26 th. As a midwife, this felt like a bad dream. Could this really be true? I cannot des...
