The George Eveleigh house at 39 Church St. was built in 1743. Eveleigh was a wealthy merchant who made his fortune in the deerskin trade built his home along Vanderhorst Creek. The concrete mooring rising out of the sidewalk to the left of the gate is an original mooring from the creek bank.

Washington Square is the city s first public park known until the 1880 s as City Hall Park for the City hall which sits in the Southwest corner. In the foreground stands a brand new statue of George Washington, for whom the park was renamed in 1881, and in the background is the Washington Light Infantry monument erected in July of 1891 commemorating the Civil War service of one of Charleston s most prestigious militia companies.
