Strawberries contain more vitamin C than oranges. One cup of berries will give you 140% of your recommended daily vitamin C intake. Strawberries can lower the risk of cancer and heart disease. Gelato is fresh Italian ice cream. It differs from traditional ice cream in ingredients, consistency and flavour. Milk based gelato contains one-third the fat when compared to ice cream and less sugar. The fruit based gelato, or sorbetto, has almost no fat at all, and no dairy ingredients. In Italian, the word gelato is used for ice cream. In English, it is used to describe ice cream made in the Italian way. When translated directly, the word gelato means ‘frozen’ or ‘to freeze.’.

An hour north of Auckland, Sharp Rd is on the right 7 kms from Warkworth on the Leigh-Matakana road just before the Matakana village. Charlies Gelato Garden is second on the left at the Matakana Rd end you can see us from the Matakana Rd. Summer Hours = Seven days a week while seasonal fruit is being picked. Generally from middle of September until middle of May, 9.00am-5.00pm. Winter Hours = Friday to Sunday, 10am-4pm. Closed Monday-Thursday. Phone: (09) 422 7942, (021) 1508820.

We grow 12 different varieties of table grape so we have grapes from the end of February to the start of May. We were lucky enough to source some varieties in the early 90’s that are no longer commercially available. These grapes are unique and taste wonderful. Table grapes are intended for eating while they are fresh, as opposed to wine grapes. Many people believed that grapes had healing properties, even before there was any evidence of this.
