The Charlwood and Hookwood website. Historic Chapel aka Napoleonic Barracks wins Lottery Fund Grant. Providence Chapel in Charlwood, Surrey has an unusual history. It was originally built in Horsham in 1797 as a barracks to house soldiers assembled to repel an invasion by Napoleon. After the Battle of Waterloo it was moved to Charlwood and turned into a nonconformist chapel. When it became disused in 2012 it was purchased by the newly-formed Providence Chapel Charlwood Trust. Watch this interesting video kindly supplied by Tim Holyoake. The Lowfield Heath windmill first appeared on Rocque’s map of Surrey published in 1762, when a James Constable owned it. The Constable family was recorded as running a mill on Horsham Common in 1615 and mention is made of a mill being brought from there to Lowfield Heath as early as 1738.
