Notes from a Charter Child. Notes from a Charter Child. Reflections on life, law and a journey to South Africa. Beauty Comes in All Colours And Even No Colour at All. April 9, 2012. In furtherance of their objective of raising awareness, I’d like to share the photos from that exhibit below. Africa is not alone when it comes to prejudice towards albinos and Canada is not an exception. Reflecting on the beauty of albinos is therefore beneficial for all societies reminding us that there is beauty in...You a...

Tragedy and Triumph: The Apartheid Museum | Notes from a Charter Child

https://charterforchildren.wordpress.com/2011/10/11/tragedy-and-triumph-the-apartheid-museum

Notes from a Charter Child. Notes from a Charter Child. Reflections on life, law and a journey to South Africa. Tragedy and Triumph: The Apartheid Museum. October 11, 2011. For me, this remark begged the following question: is human tragedy worse when those inflicting the wounds of oppression are enlightened on the wrongs they are committing? Or, in brief, when they should have known better? And so on a final note, as draining as the walk through the museum was, in that it presented much sadness and suff...

Notes from a Charter Child. Notes from a Charter Child. Reflections on life, law and a journey to South Africa. February 5, 2012. Over the holidays, I had the opportunity to travel along the southern coast of South Africa. Here is a much delayed and brief photo journey of the trip:. We were told that a trip to Cape Town wouldn’t be complete without a drive along the coast. On the way, we stopped to get a glimpse of the African penguins – nestled on the beautiful beaches of Boulder’s...Looks like you had ...

The Blue Dress | Notes from a Charter Child

https://charterforchildren.wordpress.com/2011/12/12/the-blue-dress

Notes from a Charter Child. Notes from a Charter Child. Reflections on life, law and a journey to South Africa. December 12, 2011. As depicted in the picture above, the work consists of two large paintings and a dress made by the artist from bits of blue plastic. Each painting shows the dress floating free through a dark and threatening landscape. Scavenging hyenas are lurking in the midst, waiting for death but the dress dances out of their reach. Inscribed on the dress, the artist wrote:. Hopefully I&#...

run, gloria, run!: January 2015

http://rungloriarun.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html

Wednesday, January 28, 2015. I got invited to a two-year-old boy's birthday party one weekend and I was really excited about it, which I think is an indication of the state of my social life. I like birthday parties, especially kids' birthday parties, and now that I'm not a kid anymore, I don't get invited to a lot of children's birthday parties, since, you know, I don't have children. Plus this birthday had a bouncy castle! For the record, what Koreans like to do for their babies' birthdays is dress the...

run, gloria, run!: February 2015

http://rungloriarun.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html

Saturday, February 28, 2015. International Polar Bear Day. Friday was International Polar Bear Day! The Greenlandic newspaper the Arctic Journal published a feature on this occasional and printed my little anecdote about the time we ate Korean kalbi-style polar bear meat. You can read it here along with the other stories. Tuesday, February 24, 2015. The Oscars in the Arctic. Just because we're in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut, instead of Hollywood during the Oscars doesn't mean we can't class it up and enjoy it.

A young lawyer in South Africa. Wednesday, 14 December 2011. Of Turtles and Hippos. This past weekend the three of us went on a trip to St. Lucia. Rewind. On Thursday Cesar finally arrived from Canada. I am so excited he is here. He will be staying for a whole month, so we will be exploring the beauty of South Africa together. A young lawyer in South Africa...: October 2011

http://eleonorainsouthafrica.blogspot.com/2011_10_01_archive.html

A young lawyer in South Africa. Monday, 31 October 2011. I have been trying to explore the local culture by learning about the two sports that are really popular here:. Last weekend we went to the semi-finals Natal Sharks game. This weekend we saw a one-day international test cricket match between. This is what I learned:. There is a lot of pushing and falling on the ground that results in players piling on top of each other. A lot of drinking helps more. People are quite wasted by the end. I have been in.

15 billion dollars | View From Dar

https://viewfromdar.wordpress.com/2012/06/22/15-billion-dollars

My life in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. June 22, 2012. Today I sold my watch for 15 billion dollars. When the Zimbabwean economy collapsed in 2009, the highest note printed was for 1 trillion dollars. Shortly thereafter, the country switched to the American dollar. The trillion dollar notes are now sold to tourists for about $5 USD. The ten and five billion dollar notes go for a bit less. A young lawyer in South Africa...: September 2011

http://eleonorainsouthafrica.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html

A young lawyer in South Africa. Tuesday, 27 September 2011. You Are Zulu Now. In South Africa September 24 marks Heritage Day (also known as Braai Day or King Shaka Day). On this day South Africans are encouraged to celebrate their culture, heritage and traditions. In Kwazulu-Natal (the province we are in) Heritage Day was previously known as King Shaka Day, celebrating the legendary Zulu king who united the Zulu clans into a nation. So we rented a car and were on our way. Our tour guide came about 15 mi...

http://eleonorainsouthafrica.blogspot.com/2012_02_01_archive.html

A young lawyer in South Africa. Wednesday, 29 February 2012. I don't normally blog about work, because of the confidential nature of my consulation with individual clients. Yet an interesting thing happened yesterday that I just have to share with you. I previously wrote about the problem of access to the asylum process in South Africa. This problem is ongoing. As the day wore on we had some of the clients return to ensure that their names had in fact been placed on some sort of list. They also tried...
