Charting The Known

Tuesday, May 6, 2008. Countdown to familiar sounds, sights, and daunting expectations. I’m looking ahead to reentry. Spring semester is drawing to a close back at UAF, along with my own experience studying abroad at Mid Sweden University. A month from now I’ll be departing Sweden. That prospect has me thinking about my return to American culture. I long to be free of the need to pack my pocket dictionary on grocery store visits, so I can read the ingredients on food. I’m expected to take what IR...

Charting The Known: April 2008

http://chartingtheknown.blogspot.com/2008_04_01_archive.html

Wednesday, April 23, 2008. Fanship a Way of Life. If you think that that American football fans are crazed, wait till a Norwegian biathlon fan greets you with a flag in one hand a beer in the other. I used to think that extreme fan hood was a distinctly American cultural dysfunction. I’ve discovered similarly crazed fans at the world championships for biathlon, recently held in Ostersund. Fans seized the excuse to eat drink, be merry, wear silly patriotic things and stand outside in very cold weather.

Charting The Known: For better or for worse its still school

http://chartingtheknown.blogspot.com/2008/04/for-better-or-for-worse-its-still.html

Monday, April 7, 2008. For better or for worse its still school. School is school no matter where you go or how it is organized. I’m not quite sure why, but I thought school would be less monotonous in Sweden. It’s more confusing. I get lost more; look dazzled or confused more often. But whether it’s delivered in Swedish or English, school still brings more homework and early morning classes. Exams here seem to cover material in more depth then the finals I faced at University of Alaska Fairbanks. This s...

Charting The Known: Thin Ice

http://chartingtheknown.blogspot.com/2008/03/thin-ice.html

Monday, March 10, 2008. In a town that is known as ‘winter city’ and derives most of its tourism income from this picturesque concept, climate change is a hot topic. It is early February. Ice has finally frozen solid. Construction of a veritable playground on the adjacent frozen lake has begun. Nonetheless it’s still a 20 minute walk. That gives me plenty of time to contemplate the state of the 20-30 centimeters of ice that separates me from the lake’s cold waters. I went to meet Andreas on gray day that...

Charting The Known: January 2008

http://chartingtheknown.blogspot.com/2008_01_01_archive.html

Thursday, January 31, 2008. As a student of journalism I should start with: who, what, where, when and why. The first 4 are easy. Who am I? My name is Luisa I am a senior in the journalism department at UAF. What am I doing and where am I doing it? I’m spending a semester aboard in Ostersund Sweden. When? Five months suddenly seemed an eternity. I have conferred with other exchange students and discovered that the “oh no, what have I gotten my self into” moment passes quickly. The kingdom of Sweden, acco...

Charting The Known: Charting the Known!?

http://chartingtheknown.blogspot.com/2008/03/charting-known.html

Monday, March 24, 2008. I was recently in Stockholm on my way to Italy. I stayed with an Alaskan friend. Over dinner and a bottle of wine, we discussed our current life situation, her graduate school, and my semester aboard. Our desires to leave a mark on this world. I told her about this blog. I was surprised when she asked me why I named it Charting the known. Another surprise: I had no answer. Here’s my thinking on that name up top. The sun rising over the fields makes me feel like an explorer seeing ...

Charts of the day: a quick summary of recent housing data. June 16, 2015. Another round of housing data update started this week. Homebuilders’ confidence came back strong in June, as measured by NAHB market index. The gap between homebuilders’ confidence and the housing reality seemed to persist. That being said, what’s driving the equity market is the confidence, not the reality, ironically. Charts of the day: Is this weakness really transitory? June 15, 2015. June 15, 2015. June 9, 2015. Crowdworkers’ motives to take up crowdwork. One of the issues I explored as part of the survey of crowdworkers. Was their motives to engage in this form of work. Specifically, the participants were presented with a list of 16 motives synthesised from crowdwork literature and asked to select all motives that applied in their case. Participants were also given an opportunity to indicate any other motives not included in the list. Findings (Figure 1) suggest that. 10% and 4% respectively). Considerably fewe...
