Just another WordPress.com weblog. From the heat of the Sahara in late summer to the mountains of the Himalaya in winter, this *was* our route:. The sharp amongst you may have noticed that we have taken an about turn and are now reluctantly heading south. Travel Blog through Africa. Welcome to the Oliver Stevens’ Overlanding Africa Site. On the 8th October 2009 I shall be setting off from the UK to spend 12 months travelling the length of Africa. Armed with a 1992 Toyota 4wd, a 2 man tent (for added luxury) and a Michelin map of Africa I shall work my way through 17 countries and over 12,000 miles, the ultimate goal being to end up in Cape Town, South Africa one year on. Hopefully also with the Toyota and myself still intact. I hope you enjoy the site.

Travel Blog through Africa. Lesotho was everything that I was told it would be, mountainous, rubbish roads, freezing cold and begging kids. It was like being in Ethiopia all over again. Travel Blog through Africa. Sodwana Bay – South Africa. Next we headed through Swaziland and towards the coast. Swaziland is so devoid of attractions that it actually lists ‘The Big Bend’ (a slightly large bend in the road) as a tourist destination. I actually went around the ‘Big Bend’ without realising I was on one of Swaziland’s premier tourists spots. We got out after one day and headed to Sodwana Bay on the south coast of South Africa. Travel Blog through Africa. Hoedspruit, Dulstroom and crime. From Sun City we headed east towards the Blyde Canyon and Hoedspruit where there is a very successful cheetah research project. The drive was incredibly impressive and the scenery stunning. Winding up over mountains and down into the valleys beyond, we broke through the clouds on a few occasions and could look down upon them with only the tops of the highest mountains visible through the white sea of cloud. Travel Blog through Africa. The route will take me through 17 different countries and over 12,000 miles. Leaving the UK and entering France by ferry, I will travel through France (with a quick stop off in Rheims, at the heart of the Champagne region, for one last taste of decadence before 12 months of flea-bitten hostels and scorching hot tents) and then into Italy. Catching the ferry from Genoa in Italy to Tunis in Tunisia, I arrive in Africa 24 hours later at 6.00pm on the 15th October 2009.
