The Moriori of the Chatham Islands. The Moriori people were estimated by Broughton to number 1,600 at the time of his visit. The Maori invaders of 1835-36 killed a number and took many of their women as wives. Introduced diseases and intermarriage reduced the number of full-blooded Moriori.
