The road winds down through the 400 foot deep gorge to where the River Yeo flows out from the bottom of the cliff where the famous limestone caves are. The Gorge is owned by the Nation Trust on one side and by the Longleat Estate on the side where the caves are. Because much of the Gorge is inaccessible, it is a haven for wildlife, Peregrine Falcons have made a home there and recently both Soay Sheep and British Primitive Goats have been introduced.
