Maija In Bolivia: February 2009
http://maija-bolivia.blogspot.com/2009_02_01_archive.html
Friday, February 27, 2009. Moving right along, I find myself completing over 6 months in Bolivia. 6 months! That’s half a year. Wow. According to my host mom, my experience in Bolivia is now complete. That’s right: I had Dengue. Dengue fever is an acute febril disease transmitted through mosquitoes. For a full 7 days, I experienced fever, headache, nausea, muscle aches, lethargy, and loss of appetite. Rolling over in bed left me breathing like I’d just run a marathon. For February, I entered into a class...

Maija In Bolivia: September 2008
http://maija-bolivia.blogspot.com/2008_09_01_archive.html
Thursday, September 18, 2008. I have been in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia, for about a month now. My Spanish is definitely getting better! However, my host mom still introduces me as her daughter that SPEAKS Spanish, but doesn't UNDERSTAND Spanish. This is because the people here talk really fast, and my ears are still adjusting so that I can tell the difference between the start and end of words. I am getting better at it though! Above: On the way to Samaipata. the beautiful Bolivian countryside.

Maija In Bolivia: May 2009
http://maija-bolivia.blogspot.com/2009_05_01_archive.html
Monday, May 18, 2009. I have now completed 9 months in Bolivia! Which means I only have 23 days left before I return to the U.S. on the 11th of June! I finally got a chance to go to el campo (the countryside) where my family has tons of cows! The weather here has started to become cold and rainy! There are still plenty of warm days, but there are several jacket-worthy ones as well. The weather changes have given me a stuffy/runny nose. It’s called “Historias de Vino, Singani y Alcoba.R...My return fli...

Maija In Bolivia: December 2008

Sunday, December 21, 2008. I am now at 4 months in Bolivia! Shortly after Thanksgiving, Enrique Iglesias came to Bolivia. With the cheapest ticket costing only $8, I figured it was something I had to see. So I purchased the $15 upgraded ticket, grabbed a few friends, and head to my first big-time concert. I had an amazing time singing “Bailamos! It wasn’t my only musical experience this month. My host family also took me to a cover band for Pink Floyd. It was awesome! Since Elva’s mother isn’...She also ...

For the Love of Life: May 2008
http://horizon-to-horizon.blogspot.com/2008_05_01_archive.html
For the Love of Life. The world is real. Shit. It is. Days in the Capital. It goes without saying that the government has a big presence here. Government buildings can be identified by a Canadian flag flying over them, and, (with the exception of parliament) very ugly architecture. Not exactly inspiring seeing the facets of our democracy going about their business in concrete bunkers. Waiting for a protest, which I'm assured are plentiful. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). For the Love of Life. The world is real. Shit. It is. Back to the Beginning. I am back in Ecuador, back in Las Tunas, with my friends, on the coast. It still rains a lot, but there's sunshine in the late afternoon, and it's WARM! Anyway, I'm going to be here to celebrate Carnaval, which begins on the 1st, and promises to be a great party. For the Love of Life. The world is real. Shit. It is. Gary has tagged me to tell 8 random facts about myself. In turn, I need to tag others. Very well Gary, and Seraphine, I accept the challenge and give you 8 random facts about myself. 1 I have only ever one bone in my body break. My skull. I suffered a skull fracture from falling from a galloping horse that had spooked. It is reckoned that the helmet I was wearing saved me from fatally serious damage. 6 In my human rights work, I enjoy doing work that ...

For the Love of Life. The world is real. Shit. It is. Runs with shoeshine boys, tried to volunteer and failed, new folks in my apartment. This brings us to today. they are electing representatives to the new National Assembly, whose job it will be to change the Ecuadorian Constitution, parties are very low key this week as a result, with a distinct lack of alcohol. The View from my Apartment Window. Threatened with a knife on a bus, got lost five times now, still don´t speak any German. So far, so good.
