The Nihilist: Books: The Emmigrants by WG Sebald
http://melvinreveron.blogspot.com/2010/12/books-emmigrants-by-wg-sebald.html
Sunday, December 19, 2010. Books: The Emmigrants by WG Sebald. The Emigrants by W.G. Sebald is a first person narrative, that reads like a memoir, and told from the point of view of someone who appears to be the author, but it isn’t. There are a couple clues that lead me to conclude The Emigrants is entirely a work of fiction. The author was born during the latter stages of World War II in Nazi Germany. The author’s father joined the German military in 1929, served in the Wehrmacht, and was a p...Paul wa...

The Nihilist: December 2009
http://melvinreveron.blogspot.com/2009_12_01_archive.html
Saturday, December 5, 2009. Adrian Monk is a memorable character. He is a man most find to be intolerable because of his countless quirks, phobias and idiosyncrasies. He suffers from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), which can be excruciatingly frustrating. But Natalie has a good heart. She was able to look past the quirks, phobias and idiosyncrasies and understand Mr. Monk is a brilliant, sensitive man who is able to authoritatively function beneath the façade of phobias. I admire Natalie because she...

The Nihilist: November 2009
http://melvinreveron.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html
Sunday, November 22, 2009. Mr Monk Lives Happily Ever After. Watch a television show long enough and you will become emotionally attached to the characters. Detective Adrian Monk is a sympathetic character, a former police detective who mourns the death of his wife and is constantly battling phobias, depression and a crippling Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Monk resigned from the police force at the end of episode. Captain Stottlemeyer and Lt Disher suggested he exit the building through the we...

The Nihilist: Books: Out Stealing Horses by Per Petterson
http://melvinreveron.blogspot.com/2011/02/books-out-stealing-horses-by-per.html
Sunday, February 6, 2011. Books: Out Stealing Horses by Per Petterson. Out Stealing Horses by Per Petterson is a strange novel on several levels. The first chapter starts out in a deliberate staccato style, but afterward the narrative is less constrained due to the impressionistic nature of the writing. In an odd coincidence, his neighbor, Lars is Jon’s brother and Odd’s accidental killer. 8221; And as much affection Trond has for this woman, he never identifies her by name, only as Jon’s mother. Further...

Monday, February 8, 2010. Saints Win Super Bowl XLIV. The New Orleans Saints defeated the Indianapolis Colts 31-17 in Super Bowl XLIV, but the game was closer than final score would indicate. The Saints were leading by seven with 3:12 left in the fourth quarter. Peyton Manning was leading the Colts to a potential game tying drive when he threw an interception to defensive back Tracy Porter, who returned the ball 74 yards for the game-clinching touchdown. In the third quarter, the Saints had the ball for ...

The Nihilist: Religion and Politics
http://melvinreveron.blogspot.com/2011/09/religion-and-politics.html
Monday, September 5, 2011. In the United States, in our present time, I would be considered a radical, but in most parts of the world I would be considered an ordinary socialist. I believe in an activist government because there are problems the private sector cannot solve by itself. We are at the mercy of pharmaceutical companies because the costs of life saving medications could bankrupt 95% of the people living in the United States. Public education is in danger of becoming extinct. A free educati...

The Nihilist: January 2010

Sunday, January 31, 2010. Governing in the Age of Obama. I believe it was film critic Roger Ebert who said, “You review the movie you saw, not the movie you wanted made.” We should use the same approach in judging President Obama’s first year in office. Candidate Obama ran on hope and change and his inauguration last January stimulated the imagination of his supporters. A year later, the word “disappointment” is often used to evaluate President Obama’s first year in office. In that sense, his first year ...
