Weedpicker's Journal:: Bird Well and Prosper
http://cherylharner.blogspot.com/2015/05/bird-well-and-prosper.html
Saturday, May 16, 2015. Bird Well and Prosper. As the dawn breaks fresh on a new day of birding. It is the beginning of a journey. No two days of birding are the same. One never knows if the birding will just be good, or if something in this day might be life-changing. Our journeys all start differently. My interest in "serious" birding did not happen until my 40's. Even now, it is but a portion of my interest and always tied to plant communities and habitats. Young raccoon sleeps off a rough night.
Weedpicker's Journal:: May 2015
http://cherylharner.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html
Thursday, May 28, 2015. Forgive the obvious title. It seems a forgone conclusion to name pollinator programs for the bee. But bees are not the only pollinators, and many of the sexual surrogates for plant reproduction don't buzz at all. Take moths and birds for an example. If you haven't thought much about this before, I hope you will join us this Saturday at 7:00 pm at Gorman Nature Center. In Mansfield, Ohio. Prepare to have your mind blown. We will talk about all kinds of pollinators! This is has had ...

Tuesday, May 19, 2015. Lakeside, Ohio has many attractions:. The beautiful shores of Lake Erie, fine food and entertainment, friendly people and quaint architecture. Now it even has a very special park for nature lovers. It is a botanical "step back in time" featuring the historic flowers of Marblehead. I'll be leading two walks on Saturday, May 23rd at 3:00 and again at 4:00 pm if you would like to experience this woodland garden in person. Walk/field trip details can be found here. It should be putting...
Weedpicker's Journal:: Hosting the Bullock's Oriole
http://cherylharner.blogspot.com/p/hosting-bullocks-oriole.html
Hosting the Bullock's Oriole. Bullock's Oriole - in Heins' Ohio backyard. Photo C. Harner. Hosting a Rare Bird. This oriole looked different from a Baltimore. It wasn’t in BIRDS OF OHIO. It did look exactly like the Bullock’s in PETERSON, but that bird lives far, far away. Emailed my brother Bill Murphy, the family bird guru. Bill was gently skeptical that there was a Bullock’s oriole in Monroe County Ohio. Bob emailed some pictures. Or not see it, which seemed more likely. When it’s hungry, I gues...
Weedpicker's Journal:: Old Growth Trees in Evansville, Indiana
http://cherylharner.blogspot.com/2015/05/old-growth-trees-in-evansville-indiana.html
Tuesday, May 5, 2015. Old Growth Trees in Evansville, Indiana. Evansville, Indiana may not seem like a destination location, unless you are really into old-growth trees. This place is a dendrologist's nirvana. Indiana's State Champion Cherrybark Oak, Quercus pagoda. Cherrybark Oak gets it name from the odd plated bark which is reminiscent of a cherry tree. It is quite southern in its range, and barely tips into the southern most portion of Indiana. Never heard of Cherrybark Oak? Is a nature preserve....

Christianity and the Law Blog. This is a blog exploring the intersection of Christianity and the American legal system. Friday, December 30, 2011. My family and I had sort of an unusual Christmas. There were some challenges, but also many blessings. And there were a lot of worthwhile lessons along the way, which is why I thought I would share our experiences in this forum. They seem rather apropos in light of the themes running through recent posts to this blog. My wonderful guy even did all the driving ...

Thoughts and ideas about what happens out of doors. Thursday, June 28, 2012. Where Were Ya When We Needed Ya. Juvenile Northern Rough-winged Swallows. So while Susan and I paid a lot of attention to the avian activity around the creek, Lily snagged about 10 pounds of minnows with her little net. In the heat of the day we came upon a family of Northern Rough-winged Swallows, six juveniles, plus adults feeding their brood. Thursday, June 28, 2012. Monday, June 25, 2012. My Witt's End: The Golden Daze of Spring Migration

Thoughts and ideas about what happens out of doors. Friday, May 03, 2013. The Golden Daze of Spring Migration. Flock of American Golden-plovers in various stages of molt. Although it threatens my status as a curmudgeon, I too-often say there are no bad days for birding; some are just better than others. And then there are the days that are pure gold. Blackburnian Warblers have that strange way of looking at you that makes you think . Earlier in the day we had tracked down an elusive flock of American Gol...

Weedpicker's Journal:
Thursday, October 26, 2017. Forests as communities, not commodities. It is no surprise to anyone who knows me, I am a very big fan of trees. In fact, most of my educational programs in 2017 were about trees. Those programs included stories about incredible, ancient trees. Including trees and forests worthy of a special trip to see: Goose Island State Park, TX. And Cook Forest, PA. Pardon my paraphrasing of Aldo Leopold's quote to "meme" this magnificent picture of friend, Dan Boone. The photo was tak...
