荷蘭人據臺灣時，曾派兵控制此地。明末年間， 車城. 所據，原本是一片密林，土著稱之為「庫匹亞旺」（KABEYAWAN），進而轉音為「龜壁灣」。 1664年鄭經繼鄭成功領臺，派遣部將自車城登陸，開始屯田墾荒，令部統領兵士南進龜壁灣駐守，命名為統領埔（今之統埔村），逐漸形成庄村。1720年間，車城已成為閩人開拓恆春半島的根據地，由於屢遭原住民襲擊侵擾，遂環植木柵於四周以為防禦，故有「柴城」之稱；1788年福康安將軍率軍討伐林爽文黨夥莊大田時，水師即登陸於車城，之後為紀念捷軍稱車城為「福安庄」，並於庄內的福德廟立碑頌功。 至於「車城」一名，伊能嘉矩認為是「柴城」發音上的訛誤，另一說法則指稱早期車城砍伐薪材輸出臺南地區頗盛，庄...1904年，本鄉隸屬恆春廳。嗣後，恆春廳改為恆春支廳，本鄉仍舊隸屬於興文里、咸昌里與德和里。1920年重劃行政區域，本鄉隸屬於高雄州恆春郡，分7個大字。1945年再劃車城保為福興和福安兩村，同為車城鄉之轄區。 訂閱： 文章 (Atom).
